Annoying ^@^@ being echoed

I am facing a very annoying problem using KDE.
The characters ^@^@^@^@^@ keep getting echoed onto my konsole. [ NOTE that I am not using trying to cover any abuse when I used ^@ above ]

The characters ^@ keep getting echoed onto my screen.

This affects :
- Text selection in konsole
- The speed of using the left arrow key to move the cursor in any KDE app and
- Navigation of KDE Main Menu using down and up arrow

This problem doesnt seem to appear in xterm and in CUI mode without Xorg.
My current OS is FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT-201004

Has anyone come across this problem before ?

Just yesterday (the third time this year)
"33333333333333333" etc (and others) kept appearing
as if keystrokes were pressed. I dropped to the
plain console, the problem was gone. Restarted
X, it reappeared. A reboot fixed it. I suspect
a driver more than a hardware problem.

I've done multiple restarts .. didn't help.. Let me check if this thing appears without loading my wireless (ndis) driver.

Okay I have checked. The @^ definitely isn't because of the Wireless ndis driver.
Anybody else with a solution or suggestion ?

Just ignore konsole? Many other suitable xterm-clones...
(Never used konsole here.) By "driver" I was
referring to xorg-drivers (ati, nvidia, mouse,...)

The problem isn't just limited to keys apearing on konsole !
It affects The K Menu (highlighting using shortcut keys, both in K-Menu and global), KAggregator to open Links, Opera in right click options, etc.

Also, ignoring a problem is never a soultion ?

Wireless keyboard?

No wireless keyboard. I am using a Laptop.
I think I had edited the hald policy file to enable Ctrl+Alt+BACK to Kill X.
I have deleted the file.. Will test on restart and will let you guys know.
Thanks.

I've upgraded to 9.0-CURRENT-201006.. fresh .. Installed Xorg and KDE 4.4.5 and the problem still prevails !! The ^@ keeps appearing wherever it can !!
This is really annoying..

Could it be because of my recent re-installation of XP on a different partition ?
I've done a fresh install from scratch and have kept all USB devices disconnected.. and still searching.

It sounds like a defective keyboard to me, but that's not easy to test on a notebook. ^@ would be ctrl-@, which is a null. Do you have a KVM? Maybe a keymap or localization, or some utility running from /etc/rc.conf or .xinitrc or just part of KDE.

When FreeBSD is running, XP isn't, so it's not likely.

Even I had suspected KVM as a culprit but I don't think so it is.
Below are the config files :
Code:

.xinitrc:
exec /usr/local/kde4/bin/startkde4

rc.conf:

Code:

# Enable network daemons for user convenience.
# Please make all changes to this file, not to /etc/defaults/rc.conf.
# This file now contains just the overrides from /etc/defaults/rc.conf.

Its a fresh KDE 4.4.5 install .. and ^@ appeared even before I set my KDE Shortcuts.

This problem is keeping my KDE usage almost inoperable !
I'll try and change the localisation using sysinstall and get back..

I have tried changing the text localisation to suit different countries but this didn't help. I am concluding this as a hardware issue.
Thanks for the assistance to everyone who responded.

The problem got auto-solved and was good for a few days untill 3 days back when it reappeared when I banged the base of the laptop on the table alongwith
plugging-in the charger.
A quick attempt of repeatedly switching on and off of the Power supply source increased the appearances of ^@
I removed and reinserted the battery and no the problem has gone.
It has something to do with the battery or Power.
SOLVED
