After a pkg update/upgrade session Mate don't start.
In logged in in Terminal I found this message:
mate-session [1061]: GLib-GIO-Error: Settings schema 'org.mate.interface' is not installed aborting .....

In ~/.xsession I used:
exec /user/local/bin/mate-session
and test
exec ck-launch-session mate-session
with the same result.

I have this FreeBSD 12 installation with Mate installed in a VirtualBox. I deal with this from time to time.
I started with FreeBSD 12.0 and all pkg update, pkg upgrade / freebsd-update fetch install runs have been almost frictionless.

Versions:
Host OS - Mac OS X ElCapitan 10.11.6
Virtual Box 6.1.14 r140239 (Qt5.6.3)
Extension Pack 6.1.14r140239

% freebsd-version -kru
