About cleaning the /var/db/freebsd-update folder

I noticed that in this folder for 9 months, when updating the system, files of more than 4.5 Gigabytes were accumulated.
Question: do they need to be removed manually or are they sometimes removed automatically?

P.S. I understand that files are stored there if you need to make the system rollback.

Before a major or minor update I typically empty it, then leave it for the patch revisions. Make sure you don't actually need the rollback info, then you can fairly safely delete everything. Keep the directory itself though, it has to exist.
