"best" window manager for FreeBSD?

I used to use gnome2 as my WM on Ubuntu, then gnome3 happened and I jumped ship for XFCE, but some things are missing IMO. Now that I'm trying FreeBSD as my primary OS, I installed gnome2, but I don't want to be left behind while other WMs continue to be developed. I have tried MATE and Cinnamon on Ubuntu and Mint, but they aren't quite up to snuff yet.

Things I like about gnome2:
Code:
* [ Applications | Places | System ] menu
* Places -> Connect to server, allows me to mount over ssh easily.
* I am accustomed to all of the gnome applications, like gedit, gcalc, gnome-terminal, etc.

Things I dislike about XFCE:
Code:
* I can't right click -> properties -> permissions -> allow executing
* I can't ctrl+click or ctrl+drag to select multiple files on the desktop

Any input at all would be helpful. Thanks!

IMHO stick to GNOME2 as this works best for You, why would You want to move to something else if it still works best for You?

There is no best window manager for FreeBSD. In fact, the two desktop environments you mentioned are more than just window managers. Gnome2 is available for FreeBSD, you're probably best off sticking with that.

Thanks everyone. I just don't want to be "left behind." Is gnome2 still actively developed in the FreeBSD ports tree?

"Developed" is not exactly the right term to use here. The GNOME 2 desktop is still maintained by the port maintainers but the changes made by them are just to make it compile and work as best as possible on FreeBSD. Any new features would come from the upstream that is the GNOME 2 developers at http://gnome.org

Understood. Thanks.

If you want a ton of features then go for x11/kde4. It is ported by a great team and up-to-date.

Personally I use x11-wm/awesome.

I tried KDE a long time ago, maybe it's time to try again. Thanks.

Still a fan of e16. If your looking at all your choices check that one out as well as enlightement 17 as well.

Some info on this well aged web site which you may be interested in looking at:

Not really at the moment (version 4.8.4). There is a lot of work to do and being done on it, so big updates are coming...

I generally prefer xfce, (which works slightly differently with FreeBSD than it does under Linux, due to automount issues, etc).
But I also have KDE, fluxbox, and icewm installed and use them now and then.
I use SLIM as my login display manager.
