2FA question

I have just seen the posting from SirDice about accounts being possibly commandeered for spam posts. I think I would like to try 2 factor authentication, but before I jump into that fully, I would a "cook's tour" of how that works on the forums, as in what do I have to do th authenticate after turning it on. Just a bit of due diligence before I do something irrevocable ;)

You wouldn't ever guess that I have shot myself in the foot doing things like this before, would you?

I use FreeOTP on my phone for this. Once linked you just enter your username/password like normal. Then you get an additional request for the OTP number on FreeOTP. That's it.
 
When activating 2FA you will also get a list of backup codes you can use if your TOTP app/plugin/whatever fails. Just store them in your password manager (many of which nowadays can also handle TOTP directly) and you'll be fine even if TOTP fails (usually only true if your system time is horribly off).
