More and more new threads are started in the General section of the forums, which is basically the forum of last resort, except when you actually want to discuss something belonging to the FreeBSD general base system, like
  • programs in /bin, /sbin, /usr/bin, and /usr/sbin, e.g. ps, top, sshd, inetd, etc.
  • configuration files and scripts under /etc, e.g. /etc/rc.conf, /etc/rc.d/named, etc.
  • the /boot section, kernel, modules, loader
  • base system libraries
  • file systems and their layout
  • etcetera
Every forum has a description of topics that belong in it, so make sure you read those short forum descriptions, e.g.

** Installing & Upgrading
-> Installing and upgrading FreeBSD.

** Installation and Maintenance of FreeBSD Ports or Packages
-> Installing and maintaining the FreeBSD Ports Collection or FreeBSD Packages (i.e. third party software).

** Web & Network Services
-> Discussion related to network/web services such as apache, bind, sendmail, etc.

Etcetera.

In other words: if you really have no idea where to start a thread that's not about the base system, post it in General, and an admin or a moderator may move it to a more suitable location. If a moderator feels you could and should have chosen a better suited forum, you may receive a warning.

Also note that the Forum has a Search function. You may find that your topic is already being discussed, or that your particular problem has already been solved.

Important note:
Issues that are very technical or detailed should not be discussed in general user-oriented forums like The FreeBSD Forums. These forums are intended for end-user support with installing and/or running FreeBSD and/or applications from the ports tree, not for routinely resolving low-level problems with the operating system or add-on applications. Developers and port maintainers usually do not spend much time on these forums, and we routinely refer technically detailed questions to them.
If your topic is not of a general nature and really requires developers or programmers to get involved, consider opening this topic elsewhere, e.g.:
In the case of the FreeBSD base system:
1) by posting to one of the relevant mailing lists
2) by opening a bug report
In the case of ported applications:
1) by contacting the port maintainer (run make maintainer in the port directory)
2) by opening a bug report
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to ask questions the smart way.

[FONT=Fixedsys]Oh, and please don't start new topics with the following subjects:
* Help!
* Question!!!
* Newbie here!
* I'm stuck ! :(
* etc.
Use a topic title that describes the problem.

Thank you.
