I don't exactly remember when I switched from using a Linux machine as the firewall to using a BSD machine (it was OpenBSD then), but must have been about 2004 or so. I know that I installed the Linux firewall in 99 or 2000.

I had a complete FreeBSD with enough stuff for an IP firewall on one 1.44 floppy which I set to readonly. I felt very good about that setup.

However, ELF in FreeBSD-3 made that impossible.
