Empathy not loading

I installed GNOME-2.30 on FreeBSD-8.1 but when I click on Applications-->Internet-->Empathy IM Client, it does not load.
 
Open gnome-terminal and start empathy there. Look for any messages that might give a clue why it's not working.
 
I opened gnome-terminal.

Same here.. FreeBSD 8.1 + Empathy 2.30.2

I know this is an old thread but I'll add so I don't create new ones. I am also having the same problem on 9.x

Anyone have a solution?
 
Empathy does load in FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE, but it just keeps saying "Connecting..." and nothing happens...
When I run it from xterm, there aren't any kind of messages. I'm using MATE.
Bot, MATE and Empathy were installed with pkg install.
