    Drive Permissions Help

Greets all. I can mount and umount cd/dvd media, but when I fire up k3b it says no device found, and despite pointing it (under both reader and writer options) directly to the device, it still doesn't work. Can I assume this is some kind of permissions issue? How might I troubleshoot this?

    How necessary is a firewall?

Well, I guess i'm going to have to try and find out something more on PF perhaps. I never went to school for computing so everything i've ever learned has been mostly out necessity. Still, to anomie, that last line is encouraging. At least i'm no longer wondering if my laptop here is a...

    How necessary is a firewall?

I have no idea what a NAT layer is. I've heard that term used alot with routers, which I do not have. What is pf short for? I'll google for it.

    How necessary is a firewall?

Here goes the question that might likely get me laughed out of the community so to speak, but is a firewall necessary? I'm running 8.0 Release, and i've not done a thing regarding security since my install other than keep up with the freebsd-update tool. Internet security stuff was always a...

How can I edit my own Profile Picture?

@ lme@ Indeed, your avatar does make me want to laugh a little every time I see it. I just can't help but wonder what he's saying. Is he *beep**beep**beep**beep**beep*in' about the meaning of life, pondering the metaphysics of Linus Torvald's toaster, or compiling his BSD kernel out loud. We...

Ash Ketchum is murdering your kids!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmNb3xJFzkc Suffice it to say, several parts of this video made me almost fall off my couch.

    girlfriend using freebsd

Damn straight! G'damn straight. That statement could not have been more concise, more accurate, any closer to hitting the proverbial nail on it's head. :beer Respect! --Q

    How unclean is Linux, really?

I throw my two cents in the same lot; as long as I was a linux man, there are two simple quotes used in peoples signatures here (from links stated by the killasmurf above) that say much: "If 386BSD had been available when I started on Linux, Linux would probably never had happened." Linus...

    Chiptune?

Now there's a man with taste. The SID likely my 2nd favorite chip, followed closely by the 2A03. Good stuff. --Q

    Chiptune?

Anyone here familiar with chiptune? It is a genre of electronic music that can be preformed in any style the electronic music world has, but is done using the sound chips of vintage video game consoles or computer systems. In my case, my beloved console is the Atari 2600, and i'm making...

    Recording from sound card

I really don't know if my sound card is or not (it's built in to the laptop). Presuming mixer +rec vol doesn't work (i'm using Audacity), and/or I don't have a full duplex card, is there any usb device to assist with this, or is it possible to use some kind of PCMCIA sound card in conjunction...

    Recording from sound card

Is there anyway to directly record the sound output of my soundcard? I've been hunting on google like a madman for how to do that. I always did hate OSS. Appears to be the most difficult sound system out there. I'm going into the chiptune market and need to be able to do this. Suggestions...

Different between BSD license and Linux license in one line

I have crazy respect for GPL softwares though. To me, it's one of the few decent charitable acts people engage in. I use the word charitable because all of the people who contribute to a GPL software, which larger ones obviously have contributors from all around the world, know they are doing it...

    port & package conflict

Is this of any use? http://freebsd.kde.org/instructions.php I prefer to stick with just one method of installing all of my software (ports). That aside, and I admit I lack the experience yet with FreeBSD that some of the fine folks here have, I myself would run pkg_info |less to identify the...

I feel that im dying with you freebsd

That's love :) Know what though, never say never. When I first got my feet wet in the open source world, I tried a small handfull of distros before coming upon Slackware. After that, I used that system for, hmm, somewhere between 7 and 8 years I think, and never at all got the itch to try...

What kind of music do you listen to?

@_Daisuke Perhaps so lol. I can spout off a few more: DJ Krush, DJ Logic, Mixmaster Mike, 3rd Bass, Kurtis Blow, Venetian Snares, The Automator, Dr. Octagon/Kool Keith, Bootsy Collins, Vic Fontaine, Bob Marley, DJ Kurtis Mantronik / Mantronix, Flying Lotus, Kraftwerk, Otto Von Schirach...

    Music/Production

I've used GarageBand for creating beats, and Traktor DJ Studio for mixing live sets, all on the Mac. I'd like to know if any of you have any recommendations for similar such softwares available to us here in FreeBSD. I refuse to use Windows, and i've used Apple since I was around 5 years old...

What kind of music do you listen to?

A little hard metal of course, but mainly electronic stuff (my most favorite is Squarepusher). Alot technobass/electrobass (like Techmaster P.E.B., Dynamix II, Beat Dominator, and a hundred others). UK Garage is pretty wicked stuff too. I also love underground & intelligent hiphop (ie MF...

    we should support opera

I might ask what is wrong with your setup. I've never come across a site that doesn't work just fine yet. In fact, in terms of errors or malrenderings (yeah I made that word up, I think), the only thing i've ever had go at all "wrong" would be ebay pages. They display fine, except I find that...
