Read whatever books you like. The C99 standard adds little over the C89 standard. Some of the commands to compile and link etc may be different (or platform specific) but the actual code and explanations should be relevant.
I believe hangouts requires a propriety plugin to do video which Google does not provide for FreeBSD. You could try net-im/uTox for an open source video chat client, can anyone suggest any other solutions?
Regarding MIDI I believe the only support is through USB via the snd_uaudio driver. You can probably use the likes of audio/fluidsynth if you need soundfonts and audio/ardour or audio/rosegarden if need a DAW.
