FreeBsd 8.1-RELEASE #0 and Gnome 2.30.2
I have (apparently) successfully installed a number of ports through the CLI but only two of these, (Etherape & Celestia-gnome), appear in the Gnome drop down menus. I have also tried to install through the <system><administration><add/remove software>...
KDE4 won't start
@d_mon
I did exactly what you suggested including installing kdm.
At KDE startup I get a KDE background with a picture of a hard drive and that's all.
Can you point me to what log files I should be looking at to try and understand what is going wrong?
thanks
Hi all.
After much frustration I completely reloaded Freebsd 8.1 from scratch via CD and then immediately tried to install KDE4 from the ports collection.
I installed the ports in this order...
kde4
kdebase4
kdebase4-runtime
kdebase4-workspace
kdelibs4
All of these installed...

freebsd 8.0 to 8.1 upgrade
@SirDice
/etc/rc.conf is unchanged and does specify the hostname which I have always used.

Thank again for your interest
@da1
Thanks for the tip. I tried both options but the situation remains identical. I should mention that whichever user I attempt to log in with gives the same response.
upgrading 8.0 to 8.1
Booted into single user mode:
@da1 -
All users still exist in "master.passwd"
I don't know how to delete the hashes and reset the passwords. Can you help here?
I was running 8.0 -p3
To upgrade I did this:
# freebsd-update upgrade -r 8.1-RC2
<I then edited all files...
After trying this as per the Freebsd documentation the system boots and displays:

Whatever user name I enter simply returns the same screen without asking for a password.
I can't find any information about this on this forum using the "search" option...
Hal again
@wblock:
Thank you for all your efforts. I did exactly what you suggested and rebooted.
I then did
# cd /usr/ports/sysutils/hal
# make install clean
and got the exact same output as before.
Would it be good time to admit defeat and re-install Freeebsd from scratch?
@DutchDaemon...

Here is the end of the logfile. Everything prior to this looks normal.

HAL has left the building...
I have spent a few hours trying to update HAL to the latest version which appears to be hal-0.5.14_8.
I have tried portupgrade -R hal which failed with error 1. No further information was given
I then tried portmaster sysutils/hal which also failed.
I then tried...
pkg_info -Ix hal polkit
Thanks for the reply.
The above command displays:
gstreamer-plugins-hal-0.10.6_1.3
hal-0.5.8.20070909
polkit-0.96_2
Hope this helps...?

To DutchDaemon:
I do have:
polkitd_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
in /etc/rc.conf
ps -ax shows among other things:
/usr/local/bin/dbus-daemon --system
/usr/local/sbin/polkitd
/usr/local/kde4/bin/kdm-bin
No sign of hald running though...
To wblock:

Yes but...
I have checked these entries and both are correctly formatted but "hald" is not running.
If I try and start it manually simply get a response "starting hald" but the daemon does not in fact run.
I don't know where to look for an error log for this so can someone please hepl?
Yes but...
I have checked these entries and both are correctly formatted but "hald" is not running and shows the following error when I try to start it manually:

As part of a seemingly never ending attempt to install KDE4, the process attempts to install xscreensaver.
Here is the log of the install which indicates GTK and Motif are missing. If I do "pkg_info" it says that GTK is installed.
Once again, not sure where to start with this one...
