Note that async is the recommended mode of mounting a ufs filesystem if you are using gjournal (precisely because there is a journal underneath, and the risk of losing data is negated. You shouldn't also need fsck). If I remember correctly, UFS has been multithreaded since FreeBSD 6.

Are you using the binary NVIDIA driver in X? I think it relates to some problems with slow console switching from X to console and vice versa. Try without it.

Yes, it will probably take a while until it gets in the tree. It's just a single executable however (and a man page), so it doesn't need any installation at all. Just unpack and run.

You can try with Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file under the nv Driver section. I use the 'nv' driver and this solved the problem.
