    HOWTO: Nice fonts

I find the Red Hat's "Liberation" font suite to be one of the best out there, as they've been extremely well hinted recently. For me, they are much better than the DejaVu Fonts, give it a try if you are looking for nice fonts. Be sure to try the latest version from here...

    [rant] the HAL

Yes, it seems HAL was written with Linux in mind only. It also seems that everything is moving towards the "HAL way", especially with the latest X.org defaulting to HAL for almost everything. Fortunately, people like Joe Markus Clarke and others are making huge steps in porting the HAL mess...

    cdrecord/k3b/hal/atapicam: coasters

I did encounter issues similar to what you describe here, mel_flynn. The solution I found was to disable HAL probing of my cd burner, as described here: http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/halfaq.html#q2 After that, I burned all my cd's from the command line without any problems. In your...

command line freeBSD vs internet addiction

Well said. If you don't truly decide that you should stop browsing so many hours, you will eventually always overcome any self-imposed obstacles you might have put anyway.

    "asynchronous mount"

Note that async is the recommended mode of mounting a ufs filesystem if you are using gjournal (precisely because there is a journal underneath, and the risk of losing data is negated. You shouldn't also need fsck). If I remember correctly, UFS has been multithreaded since FreeBSD 6.

    Slow Terminal Switching

Are you using the binary NVIDIA driver in X? I think it relates to some problems with slow console switching from X to console and vice versa. Try without it.

sound skipping with Free BSD 7.0

What else is running besides the audio player when the audio is skipping? Do you notice it when the computer is otherwise idle, or only under heavy or moderate load?

    about gcc >=4.2 in base

I remember seeing a relevant thread in one of the mailing lists. It seems that GCC 4.2.1 is here to stay, due to the FreeBSD team's strong distate of the GPL v3 license, and the fact that 4.2.1 was the last GCC version licensed with GPL version 2.

    New port searching tool

I'm glad it's useful to others as well :) It's already in the tree, thanks to miwi@'s fast response.

    New port searching tool

Yes, it will probably take a while until it gets in the tree. It's just a single executable however (and a man page), so it doesn't need any installation at all. Just unpack and run.

    New port searching tool

Of course, both ways are handy. It's just that I usually use the command line, and make search seems a bit limited to me.

    New port searching tool

I was looking for a command-line tool that searches within the ports tree and presents the results in a colorful and informative way. I wasn't satisfied with the current programs in the ports tree, so, I made this little script in python which does exactly that: eXquisite Port Seeker...

    The FreeBSD SysAdmin's Favorite Tools

Very well, I've saved a lot of data from some defective cd-roms. I haven't tested it on a hard disk though.

    The FreeBSD SysAdmin's Favorite Tools

I recently appreciated recoverdisk(1), it's invaluable in many situations. Not many people seem to know it, as it's new (First appeared in 7.0).

The nv driver does not work very well with Firefox3

You can try with Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps" in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file under the nv Driver section. I use the 'nv' driver and this solved the problem.
