    Mounting USB Flash Drive

You can see your da-devices by ls /dev/da* If you see e.g. /dev/da0s1 listed, try mounting with mount_msdosfs /dev/da0s1 /media/usb If you have set up sudo correctly you can do it as an ordinary user sudo mount_msdosfs /dev/da0s1 /media/usb

I am a completely new user and need your help

Obviously, young people require more, and do more multitasking than an old guy like me. :\ I don't use kdenlive, firefox, amsn or audacious, so I can't tell how well it would work when all of those are running simultaneously. But I did a simple "stress test": Running Kmail, Korganizer, Opera...

I am a completely new user and need your help

I have FreeBSD 8.1 with KDE4-4.4.5 running on pentium 4 with 512 MB RAM as my desktop at home. No problem! :) At work I have the same configuration, but 1 Giga RAM. There is no noticeable difference in performance.

    Downgrading X

I had a similar problem with the xf86 driver when I installed FreeBSD 7.2 last year. The version that was installed was xf86-video-intel-2.6.3, and it did not work. Here is what I did: 1. Installed portdowngrade 2. portdowngrade -o -s :pserver:anoncvs@anoncvs.fr.FreeBSD.org:/home/ncvs...

    New Flash10-plugin cannot be installed

knutselaar, give more information. This seems a bit mysterious to me. I have installed www/linux-f10-flashplugin10, without any problems. Moreover, I can't see any ports called libcurl-* in the ports tree. Are you sure you are running FreeBSD? Can you give the command you used to install the...

    kdepim 4.4_1

I know it is a long time ago, but can you describe what you did to get akonadi running? Two weeks ago I upgraded my home computer from 7.2 to 8.1, and everything works nicely with kde4. So I thought it was safe to upgrade my computer at work from 8.0 to 8.1, but no! Kmail refuses to work...

Can't delete file with strange name

Could you elaborate a bit on this, Carpetsmoker? The file is displayed with ls, but isn't that normal behaviour even for directories? ls -l does not list the directory as a file, it just reports "invalid argument".

Can't delete file with strange name

After studying manpages for a long time, I jumped into it: # fsdb /dev/da0s1 ** /dev/da0s1 Cannot find file system superblock ioctl (GCINFO): Inappropriate ioctl for device fsdb: /dev/da0s1: can't read disk label # So, no luck! As reported in my reply to killasmurf, you are right. Thank...

Can't delete file with strange name

I compiled it as instructed and did: % ~/rfiles . % ls Vivian?3 I think the problem is that your program deletes normal files, but not directories. And the Vivian?3 is a directory, as shown by the Macbook. To test this, I created two directories and populated them with two files in each...

Can't delete file with strange name

No, it does not include the MacBook. There the directory and files seem to be O.K., so I guess deleting it would be no problem. But that would of course take the fun out of this project! The directory was copied from the Macbook originally. Thanks for the idea! I wasn't aware of this...

Can't delete file with strange name

Sorry for this late answer, but occasionally I am required to do some useful work during the day. Killasmurf, you are incredible! When I read your post suggesting a perl script, I turned around to grab my Camel and Cokbook from the bookshelf. When I turned back, you had already supplied three...

Can't delete file with strange name

That may work. However, I already tried konqueror as file manager, and it does not see the file at all. Anyway, I installed mc, although not very successfully: ~ % mc /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/local/bin/mc: Undefined symbol "g_malloc0_n" I probably need to update my ports, but am reluctant to...

Can't delete file with strange name

I put the card into the Macbook, and had no problems reading it. It turns out the file is actually a directory with several files in it. Its name is Vivian<3. I was told by the owner that <3 is kind of a smiley for a heart: Just tilt your head 90 degrees to the right, and you will see it! Those...

Can't delete file with strange name

Thanks Beastie! I kind of suspected it had something to with checking the disk. ;) I think the arguments of letting windows fix windows errors is a good one, so I will try it out tomorrow. And I will test it in the Macbook tonight. And I won't quote you. (Not more than the above quote, anyway.)

Can't delete file with strange name

Another original idea! You guys are bright! This one gives some output, but I need some help to find out if it helps. I am far outside my comfort zone now. :h Here we go: % ls|hd 00000000 56 69 76 69 61 6e 3f 33 0a |Vivian?3.| 00000009 % As far as I can see from...

Can't delete file with strange name

No, never thought about that. After reading through the manpage for ls I also tried the -b option. But alas: % ls -B Vivian?3 % ls -b Vivian?3 % So the file definitely does not want to give up its secrets!

Can't delete file with strange name

Yes, I have access to Windows. What does this command do? Anyway, I would rather like to find a way of doing this in FreeBSD. This file is not a big problem for me, it occupies less than 1 MB out of the 4 GB on the card. And if I really get desperate I guess I can insert it in the Macbook again...
