The Case for Rust (in the base system)

I think it isn't a matter of 'evolution of programming', it's matter of 'maintain professional and smart developer ground'. I don't want to offend anyone in any way, I just want to say that it seems to me that using languages that facilitate the writing of programs to avoid developers having to...

    2024Q1 portbuild trouble

The port option dialog is changed recently (I don't remember when this happened, one day I see the message 'F1' for Ports Collection help I never seen before). The old version (dialog4ports) was replaced by ports-mgmt/portconfig. To use dialog4ports I guess the two environment variables can be...

    14.0-RELEASE weird build world/kernel/ports behavior

Well, I'm not an FreeBSD engineer/developer (I'm not an engineer at all), but what follows is what I seen on my system. This story is very very very long, but to avoid boring you I make it simple. One day, I don't remember when (I've neglected my system a little too much over the last six...

    14.0-RELEASE weird build world/kernel/ports behavior

epopen I run exactly in your problem. I thought it was the limited swap space, but I guess its a tmpfs problem. I'm still testing it. But I'm on 13.2-RELEASE I will report in this thread what I discovered soon.

UFS Add a Swap File on UFS

Ah, ok. Good to know. Ahahahaahhah, yes, you are right. LLVM 13 and 15 just about 2 or 3 days with only 2 cores. Each one. But that machine is a mule, it's old and I use it as a server from 10-RELEASE (or 9-RELEASE, I don't remember), from the first installation I always upgraded it from...

UFS Add a Swap File on UFS

Hi everyone, every now and then I leave the crypt. I read the paragraph 14.7. Adding Swap Space in the FreeBSD Handbook, in particular the sub-paragraph 14.7.2. Creating a Swap File. I want to have more swap space but I guess is not easy to enlarge partition 3 and shrink partition 2 (see below)...

Solved Ports no compile after upgrading system

thank you rigoletto@ I solved the problem in I-don't-know way. Initially I followed your suggestion, get the list of primary ports in a file and then remove all packages and reinstall all packages (whith pkg) in the list. It worked for a while then pkg stopped with an error at some point. I...

Solved Ports no compile after upgrading system

Hi to all. I left my server three years ago with the 10.3-RELEASE version. I thought I'd upgrade it to version 12.1-RELEASE by going from version 11.3-RELEASE: 10.3-RELEASE -> 11.3-RELEASE -> 12.1-RELEASE Today I proceeded with the first step using the command freebsd-update -r 11.3-RELEASE...

Solved 'kbdmap' and keyboard mapping files

Looking into Midnight Commander sources was also what come to my mind, I thought there was a standard or at least an unofficial 'habit list'. Yes, some of the sequences you posted use the criteria of the 'modifier suffix', some other are 'unknown' (I didn't found a match). Many thanks...

Solved 'kbdmap' and keyboard mapping files

Ok. I know what to do (more or less). I still not have a full remap of the keyboard map file and still not seen what happen to NumLock but I think it can work as expected remapping only some modifier+key. The new map is for sc (syscons) driver, not vt. I have two FreeBSD installations, both...

Solved 'kbdmap' and keyboard mapping files

The script below is an attempt to get a key (non-blocking) and map it like 'curses' do (in another system are called vitual keys). It's not complete, stopped after I realized I'm not able to map some keys, they are not keys (like Ctrl-INS) unless defined in the .kbd file. Warning Replace any...

Solved 'kbdmap' and keyboard mapping files

wow, many many thanks Avernar, I will read your posts with more attention and try to do what I'm able to do. In the past I 'moved' the fkeyNN (starting after the last shift+Fn), i.e. to have a key under Ctrl+INS, take a free or unused fkeyNN and move it at the Ctrl+INS coordinate. Actually I...

Solved 'kbdmap' and keyboard mapping files

Hi all, I have a question about keyboard mapping. Once, I modified the content of the file /usr/share/syscons/keymaps/it.iso.kbd to map some fKeyN onto keys like Ctrl-Insert, Shift-Insert, etc.. I lost that modified keyboard map file, however it worked only for program specifically written to...

Midnight Commander - exit in current directory

uzsolt gave you the real solution. This is an alternative using the hot-key Ctrl+O, it hides the panels (full screen shell) and the current directory is the one the selected panel. Type Ctrl+O again to go back.
