HOWTO: keeping FreeBSD's base system and packages up-to-date

The handbook is not the bible, it's just a bunch of advices. There is even a lot of 'nonsense' in it at least nowadays. I'm using stable since 5.0 without any problems, on the other hand you could have severe problems while using releases and your hardware is somewhat picky. It solely depends on...

    web browser choice for FreeBSD

Well, Opera is faster and it even is more responsive at small systems like Intel Atom. But it has got more problems with javascript and generally is more prone to failure on certain pages. But apart from those glitches now and then, Opera is a fine browser.

    FreeBSD amd64

If you're using anything beyond 3GB of memory then it is a must. You gain almost nothing if you're just looking for performance.

FreeBSD updates ... or lack of them

    >The community part that can code probably already does so. The bigger part can't code though. Well, the same song again and again. This saying is an image, "shut up and code". The Latin phrase I mentioned above means "deeds, not words" and this is also the same meaning of "shut up and code"...

FreeBSD updates ... or lack of them

Humor is a fine aspect of daily life, but I don't get it in this context. Most FreeBSD newbies don't recognize the seriousness of the situation. Do you know the running gag of Slashdotters? "BSD is dying" ... well, it's indeed dying, it's just a very slow and painful process and it's impossible...

FreeBSD updates ... or lack of them

Well, it's the same category in my opinion. If I have some tool like freebsd-update, then it's just reasonable to have a stable ports-tree. Without it, it just feels incomplete. And for GEM/KMS, it's just one guy, who takes the load ... you should read the comments to the mentioned article, I...

FreeBSD updates ... or lack of them

The need for such a project isn't a novum, just as the desperate cry for a stable ports-tree. But the real problem isn't the lack of ideas or a "stubborn foundation", which hoards money instead of investing it, it's the massive lack of manpower in different areas. You're talking about symptoms...

FreeBSD Foundation's New Project: Implement GEM/KMS/DRI for Intel Graphics

    >It's sad for me, though, that there doesn't appear to be any direct interest in getting the Radeon DRM updated with KMS. Sure, it's sad. But then, it's just one guy only, who is working on this. There is just one server left in my possession running FreeBSD, the other machines are either to...

Is ZFS good for Desktop use with FreeBSD

Well, I don't trust Oracle, just watch the latest news about this company or look at their history. Furthermore I don't see the ability and foremost manpower in the FreeBSD community to accomplish such a task. Yes I know of illumos and the surrounding community, but developing a filesystem of...

    UFS vs ZFS

The "versus" is an ill-fated comparison. If you're comparing just naked numbers, then ZFS looses against ext4 and brtfs. Numbers should be only one of many aspects in your consideration.
