HOWTO: Wireless with Intel 3945ABG/4965AGN on FreeBSD 8.0

Thanks for that! At least it removes some of them! Hopefully there will be an option to remove the other messages too. I emailed the wpi developer, and he said that's only because he hasn't implemented a certain multicast feature. "In the near future" it should go away.

HOWTO: Wireless with Intel 3945ABG/4965AGN on FreeBSD 8.0

Alright. I hope I haven't used up all of your patience, vermaden, but here's the current status on things. I have wireless working at boot. Boot time isn't even bad. But when I log in, I get the following messages either spamming up my login prompt or my shell prompt: wpi_newstate: SCAN ->...

HOWTO: Wireless with Intel 3945ABG/4965AGN on FreeBSD 8.0

Vermaden, sorry about all the delay. I gave up on FreeBSD way too soon and sought shelter back in the Linux world, but I realized I never really gave FreeBSD a chance. I'll be setting it back up today and I'll see if it works. If I run into the same problem, I'll post my /etc/rc.conf and my...

Can bootmgr or the Standard boot loader boot up Vista on a different slice?

I'm about to install FreeBSD again and finally give it a real chance on my system (I've been giving up way too soon), but I need to dual boot it with Windows Vista *shudder*. Lots of people suggest using the Vista boot loader and configuring it with EasyBCD, but I'd really prefer if I never had...

    Quiet the kernel during boot?

Aww . It didn't work. It still pauses for a good minute or so right at [Configuring syscons: blanktime screensaver. This is right after my wireless driver stuff shows up, so I figured the network must be holding it back. What's happening here and how can I fix it?

    Quiet the kernel during boot?

Well that didn't really improve boot time at all, but it did hide the kernel messages. Mainly what annoys me are those from the wpi driver. It always holds back the boot process by waiting until I connect to the Internet before completing booting, and if I set verbose_loading, it pushes those...

    Quiet the kernel during boot?

A quick update: I found the option verbose_loading="NO" in the man page for loader.conf, but that didn't really seem to do much of anything. I still get the white text messages about all the modules, etc.

    Quiet the kernel during boot?

Well, after having a short respite from FreeBSD by checking out Slackware, I've decided to come back to this amazing UNIX system. I have, however, run into a couple of niggles. FreeBSD displays a whole bunch of text from the kernel when it boots. Linux does it too, and when I used Linux, I...

HOWTO: Wireless with Intel 3945ABG/4965AGN on FreeBSD 8.0

Is there any way to background the process of connecting to my wireless network during boot? My computer always stops and waits until it connects to the internet before the boot process continues.

I got wireless working, but I get strange error messages at boot!

I'm not exactly sure how I would go about doing that. There has to be a simpler solution. What are the other wpi users (or anyone who gets a similar message) doing?

I got wireless working, but I get strange error messages at boot!

You mean I can't even suppress those messages from showing up? If I can't fix the problem, I'd at least like to make the messages stop showing up. Even keeping them in the boot messages (BEFORE it says "login:") would be fine. Btw, ntpd works. No more errors :)

I got wireless working, but I get strange error messages at boot!

I'll look into those. Any ideas on what wpi0: need multicast update callback might mean or how to make it stop?

I got wireless working, but I get strange error messages at boot!

Is that in ports? I set up ntpdate in sysinstall, so I should just be able to disable it from there or delete the lines from my rc.conf, right?

I got wireless working, but I get strange error messages at boot!

I finally got wifi connectivity at boot using the Handbook, man pages, the internet, and some very helpful members of the community, but I always get strange and annoying error messages at boot. First, I have ntp set to set the date and time, but it always complains about the hostname nor...

HOWTO: Wireless with Intel 3945ABG/4965AGN on FreeBSD 8.0

How do I get wpi and my card working with WEP? I've been testing lots of stuff and searching the Internet like crazy, but no luck :( I'll be happy to provide additional information if necessary.

How well does the handbook stay updated with new releases?

How exactly do you contribute to the handbook? Obviously it's not like the ArchWiki where everyone can make final edits. If I write up a section and want it in, how do I go about doing that? Edit: Never mind; I just found out how to do this from, guess what, the Handbook

How well does the handbook stay updated with new releases?

Yeah. If I understand correctly, it's saying version 8 won't be a huge shift in organization or thinking for the OS like Windows XP to Vista. It's more evolutionary than revolutionary.

How well does the handbook stay updated with new releases?

Oh, "Why FreeBSD 8 Won't Rewrite the Book"? Thanks. I'm definitely going to get version 8 now. For a time I was considering slackware, but I kept waiting and now I've finally decided I want to use FreeBSD. Hooray for UNIX!

How well does the handbook stay updated with new releases?

I'm not sure what you mean. It doesn't say anything about 8.0 released in the media, and the website still says 7.2 is the latest version.
