    I missed Xombrero

Qutebrowser is a good alternative. I mostly use Firefox with Vimium these days though. I've got better things to do than deal with stupid web compatibility issues. Guess I'm getting old :-(

Linux Sucks: If It's Not Broken Don't Fix it

Your post seems to suggest that you think that Linux developers are some sort of group of blubbering idiots who don't understand what they're doing. Clearly that is not the case. Most Linux developers are smart; probably smarter than I am. Has Linux (ecosystem as a whole, not just kernel) made...

Intel platforms from 2008 onwards have a remotely exploitable security hole

I don't really see any alternatives there other than just a few (very) old server boards?

    Improving TrueOS: OpenRC

I like rc.d because it's a good system, but I also dislike it because the very concept of daemons is not a very good one. Every daemon has to properly "daemonize". Many programs don't do this properly. In addition, they'll have to take care of their log files and such. It's also difficult to...

Intel platforms from 2008 onwards have a remotely exploitable security hole

Perhaps the worst part is that Intel has known this for about five years but did nothing. It looks like AMD is starting to offer competitive chips again, and not a moment too soon. Two manufacturers to choose from is still not a real free market, but it's a lot better than just one manufacturer...

Petition for The FreeBSD Mall to bring back the original bobble t-shirt

This is why you should get it tattooed. Lasts a lifetime :-)

    RetroBSD

I was going to make a comment that FreeBSD 2 *also* received a new release relatively late, but then I discovered: > 2.2.9-RELEASE was released April 1, 2006 as a fully functional April Fools' Day prank I've been believing a April fool's prank for almost 11 years :-/

    launchd and systemd

I've been using this for the last few days. It uses runit, which is basically an updated version of djb's daemon tools. Here's a startup script that I wrote: #!/bin/sh exec /usr/local/bin/dnsblock server -v 2>&1 systemd, for all its claims of "simplicity", looks like: [Unit]...

Interest in seeing HAMMERfs ported to FreeBSD?

This is something that has come up a few times since HAMMER's introduction. I remember Matthew Dillon commenting that it's certainly possible to take parts of the DragonFlyBSD code, but that there are also significant differences between FreeBSD and DragonFlyBSD that would require quite a bit of...

C C programming best IDE for FreeBSD -- can't find one

You know Vim has all of those features, right? Vim is an IDE, and has been one for many years. It's a pretty *crappy* IDE, but it's an IDE nonetheless. For some reason people seem to deny this... You can interface with various build tools with :make (which works with more than just make), it...

C C programming best IDE for FreeBSD -- can't find one

I am not going to download zip files, and I think most people here aren't. Sorry :-( You should probably include the contents of the zip file in the post body itself.

    iNotify for FreeBSD?

Again, it *does* work for FreeBSD, it just uses up file descriptors. The default limit is about 12k, which is rather low − conservative upper limits are not necessarily a bad thing, by the way. The current default for fs.inotify.max_user_watches is 524k. I'm not sure what a feasible upper limit...

    GPLv2 versus CDDLv1

Yet another pissing contest on what exactly a "derivative work" means. The funny thing is that the CDDL is more "free" than the GPL, and it's the GPL that's the problem here if you ask me. Not the CDDL. The position of the FSF/GNU folks is obvious: "Code that is not GPL is an abomination unto...

    FreeBSD sh on Linux?

Isn't that basically the same as the FreeBSD shell? The manpages are very similar, anyway (and a hell of a lot more readable than bash's, which is an abomination of a manpage) You almost make it sound like it undergoes a lot of changes ;-)

    Killing Browser Fingerprinting

Hiding your footprint is, unfortunately, nigh-impossible. Changing your user-agent reveals less information, but it doesn't stop sites from guessing the browser. This can be done in Javascript as well by accessing things like window.mozContact, window.opera, and some other variables I don't...
