If you have experience with Linux as you mentioned, you should't have much problems to install FreeBSD (assuming that many new lecture to expanding skills isn't unpleasent thing to you).
Welcome to FreeBSD community dude! We have a wonderful handbook, which is recommended first to learn the basics. I don't know anything about PC-BSD because I just use FreeBSD. But I think all of your questions are answered at the handbook.

I had this problem with GDM from gnome-package about one year ago and solved it with a new build of GDM from ports. So, I don't use this chaotic gnome stuff yet and cannot say if this is helpful. Just a try.
GCC versions after 4.2 are under GPLv3 and that's why they do not enter FreeBSD furthermore. And clang ist BSD license afaik.

Have a look at bsdmag08/2010. There's an nice article about "Low Resource PCs with FreeBSD" of Michaels. This summary will give you some hints to use FreeBSD effectively with older systems.
