Hi,
How do I add directories for ldconfig to scan?
How are the libraries for BSD and Linux binaries managed? I installed realplayer for linux from the ports and when I try to start it, it throws an error:
/compat/linux/opt/real/RealPlayer/realplay.bin: error while loading shared...
Read through the manual. Also found a couple of other useful things in /var/log. Generally, if the system crashes due to some induced error(like forgetting to load the firmware for iwn and accessing iwn), I would be more interested in kernel's output of the panic routine(some info message) than...
Hi,
Is there some crash log FreeBSD maintains? Like if my system reboots and I want to see the logs for why it did so?
PS: From what I have seen, the system reboot might or might not be due to kernel panic. In many cases, there won't be cores.
Yes, I did. I do have ethernet port. Will try ethernet today. I doubt its a router problem because I dual boot with Linux (Ubuntu Hardy Heron) and am able to connect to both wi-fi and ethernet.
One of the best in India:). Part of the blame should be shared by firmware manufacturers, but heck, they build as per the specs. I would have demanded WPA instead of WEP but I doubt they would understand that.
Hi,
How do you set kdm as your login manager?
I guess making an entry in /etc/ttys will do the trick.
ttyv8 "/usr/local/kde4/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on secure
Are there any other gotchas? I don't exactly remember the error but I got stuck when I tried this. Will post the output...
Ah! I tried pkg_add -r kde4.watever and got stuck. First it conflicted with almost all the libraries of kde3.5 and then it couldn't find many packages.
Got it from the perforce repository.

Got the link from here:

Phew! Still no success with the driver. I added this to /etc/rc.conf:
ifconfig_wlan0="ssid yourssid...
I am using FreeBSD 7.1. I got the driver from the source repo and compiled it.
Is it applicable to FreeBSD 7.1?
Will try this one. Is it dependent on the previous step? The previous step looks like an alias to me?
How about:
ifconfig_iwn0="ssid mynet nwkey 0x1234567890 DHCP"
Hi,
Anyone using iwn driver for wireless? I have installed iwn and iwnfw and added this to /boot/loader.conf:
iwnfw_load="YES"
iwn_load="YES"
My router authenticates using WEP. This is how I am trying to bring up the interface:
ifconfig iwn0 ssid MY_NET wepmode on weptxkey 1 wepkey...
Actually I solved it differently. I started emergency console from installation cd, mounted /, changed /boot/loader.conf and rebooted. It did a file system check and rebooted fine.
Actually I tried explicitly mounting rw while in single user mode but somehow it didn't work.
Guys,
I urgently need help on this one. I installed iwn for Intel Wireless adapter and added this line to /boot/loader.conf:
if_iwn_load="YES"
I forgot to load the firmware. I didn't add this:
iwnfw_load="YES"
Now, my system won't boot at all. It shows kernel panic while booting...
It worked. Is there a way pkg_add can search for packages on the PACKAGESITE. Like I say "pkg_add -r vlc" and it searches for and installs it. I was thinking something on the lines of other binary package management tools viz. apt-get, yum etc.
Hi,
How do I change the package repository for pkg_add/portupgrade? I tried defining PACKAGEROOT:
$export PACKAGEROOT="ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/packages/All/"
But it still won't listen and spit out following crap:
Error: FTP Unable to get...
Am new to this forum. Would comply with the practice next time.
BTW I got it solved. X wasn't coming up because I had my kernel security level pumped up. I reset it to normal and it worked fine.
I changed my /etc/rc.conf file to set the kernel security level to -1.
kern.securitylevel=-1...
H,
I am sure this question would have come up quite a few times. Please note that I ain't a unix/linux/bsd newbie before posting your responses.
I installed FreeBSD 7 on my laptop and have been trying to get X to run for a day now.
My initial try with "X -configure" fails saying:
