    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

Got my cables and connectors yesterday, did a quick test today. Same server/mobo/cpu used as in previous tests, now with all 16 Samsung EVO 850 Pro's connected. At first, very simply just all 16 drives in a raidz2 pool. And I think I'm just leaving it at this. Performance is good enough...

    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

Well, the card came in today, MUCH sooner than expected (delivery date was April 28th, and here it is ..) Fitted the card into a Supermicro Chassis to test it, and at first it wasn't even seen (not in BIOS, not in any OS I tried), so that began really well. I then tried another slot, and things...

Bootstrapping pkg from pkg.FreeBSD.org, please wait ... 3 minutes

This is definitely a problem freebsd (hosting/resources), not on my machine, virtual or iron.

Bootstrapping pkg from pkg.FreeBSD.org, please wait ... 3 minutes

This is old fashioned metal. I really wonder why a VM would (could) make any difference.

    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

Yes, this could end up being a disaster. It hasn't even left China yet and already I was required to pay an additional EUR 44 in taxes .. yay.

    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

Not sure yet how I will configure ZFS, but it's going to be at least raidz2, and I have 17 SSD's, so 3 spares to begin with. And yes, the zpool is backed up locally/daily (with snapshots of course), and about weekly remote on my own server in a datacenter in another city from where I live. I...

I have several of them, so that's covered.

    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

I went for this https://www.ebay.nl/itm/OEM-LSI-9201-16i-6Gbps-16-lane-SAS-HBA-P19-IT-Mode-ZFS-FreeNAS-unRAID/132059261390 .. from China ;-) Supposedly brand new. I'll keep this thread updated, because this is quite a cheap card for the specs. Currently I'm using a Supermicro AOC-USAS2-L8i...

    Recommend 16-port HBA (SATA) ?

Hi, Currently for my home setup, I have a self-built system made out of a Fujitsu D3417-B1 motherboard fitted with a i3-6100 CPU (really happy with that combo, low energy and quite a lot of processing power), 16GB of ECC memory, and at this moment 8 2TB drives (SAS1068E card) in a ZFS raidz1...

Bootstrapping pkg from pkg.FreeBSD.org, please wait ... 3 minutes

Why is this process so slow? It's a new install, I'm on the console, trying to install packages. In the mean time in another console, I portsnap fetch extract, and this finishes before pkg was bootstrapped!

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

Hmm interesting. On my Home FBSD box, /var/empty is also schg, uarch .. Still the manpage does not reflect the source code of rmuser it seems? On top of that it appears to be clear that developers of FreeBSD have tried to protect /var/empty from being removed, but if I check a couple of boxes...

So even if I manage to reproduce the issue, it's still all ignored?

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

    Strange.. I created a user "testuser": [root@progress ~]# id testuser uid=6060(testuser) gid=6060(testuser) groups=6060(testuser) [root@progress ~]# grep testuser /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/passwd:testuser:*:6060:6060:test user:/var/empty2:/usr/sbin/nologin /etc/group:testuser:*:6060...

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

I've given a few suggestions already. But you don't even read apparently. I mean.. the fact that this directory isn't owned by the user, perhaps? The fact that this user can't even write in it?? The fact that more users 'share' this directory??? The fact that it's named "/var/empty" .. ...

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

Yes, of course, it was me. You're right. Let's not try to make an OS move intuitive, and take away pitt-falls. Dude, I love FreeBSD. I've been using it since 2.2.x something. Still love it, still use it. But it's this attitude on the forums that breaks my love for FreeBSD. It's literally...

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

Yep, I know how to fix it, and the chflag will permanently fix it. Only reason I'm posting this is to suggest taking care of this in the OS itself. Removing a user after removing a package, should never remove it's homedir if it's not actually their (chown) homedir, is also shared with other...

SSH fail because /var/empty missing after removing dovecot packages

My concern here mainly is the pitfall. In my case this resulted locking myself out from a physical machine and I had to go through some hoola-hoops to get access again. The crux is that a users's homedir, which is a directory that's not exclusively owned by this user but is shared by other...
