    pkg wants to remove kde5

I'm not an expert here but I think that the more practical thing to do would be to just wait until it's fixed. Usually, a break that serious in a package that popular doesn't stick around for too long, so unless you desperately need to update your system it's probably not worth the hassle...

    Laptop/desktop hardware management TUIs?

Thanks. I will post there, but for now, hopefully I can get some input from the sort of people who are not familiar with mailing lists?

    Laptop/desktop hardware management TUIs?

I read through the other forums and this seemed like the best place. Is this only for feedback and suggestions about the forum itself? If so, I apologize.

    Laptop/desktop hardware management TUIs?

FreeBSD developers and users interested in using FreeBSD on the desktop often complain that hardware management utilities in major desktop environments (such as Network Manager) don't do a very good job of supporting FreeBSD or any system but Linux. To date we don't have many workarounds...

    yet another Linux-only WM?

If you interpreted my post as saying that the by-hand configuration of lagg0 is too complicated for most people who have reasonable familiarity with a shell, I'm sorry, that was misleading. It isn't. The point is not whether you can do it, whether I can do it, or even whether Sarah Palin can do...

    yet another Linux-only WM?

*nix developers pride themselves on making things that work and work well. Look, let's say I want to make a desktop environment. I have to support operating systems A, B, and C. 95% of people use A. All three systems manage wifi, sound, disk, camera, microphone, HID in different ways. It's kind...

[MacBook Pro] OS X Lion / FreeBSD Dual-Boot Setup

I'm still getting "Missing Operating System". This is what the Partition Inspector on rEFIt tells me: *** Report for internal hard disk *** Current GPT partition table: # Start LBA End LBA Type 1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT) 2 409640 400070351 Mac OS...

    irkkaaja's little UI links thread

Yeah, this could be going somewhere. I've got a few ideas, but nothing specific yet. Plus, I'm lazy and patient, not industrious and eager, so I have time in excess and effort in short supply. There are sections of the handbook devoted to desktop usage. FreeBSD isn't a desktop system, but it is...

    irkkaaja's little UI links thread

I'm using this thread to post various links which I think present a good idea about desktop user interfaces. I come across these things regularly, and I'm tired of forgetting them, plus, putting them here has the potential to inspire someone. The other obvious motivation is that some people...

Problem with wine-amd64 packages on FreeBSD 8.2

How do I enable network access from within the chroot jail, then?

Problem with wine-amd64 packages on FreeBSD 8.2

I've tried to install the unofficial wine amd64 packages. The packages install without a hitch, but trying to run wine gives a nonsense error: cannabidiol% wineboot ELF interpreter /libexec/ld-elf.so.1 not found zsh: abort wineboot /libexec/ld-elf.so.1 definitely exists, so that's not...

    Ubuntu replaces Gnome with Unity

Just, incidentally, wouldn't it make more sense to write a separate implementation of the Wayland display protocol for FreeBSD? I mean, that was part of the goal -- the X display protocol ("X Window System" actually refers to this protocol) is a pain to implement, an idea which has been...

How to make devd automount USB storage devices?

Actually I'm running fluxbox, and that's kind of a brilliant thing you've got there. I just linked the Xfce thing because I couldn't think of any other way to explain what I wanted to do.

How to make devd automount USB storage devices?

http://gezeiten.org/post/2011/01/Xfce-4.8-on-BSD-flavors This seems to be a trend. Which is fine, because desktop environments and file managers never should have handled device recognition in the first place. Keeping with the trend, I'd like to have devd mount whatever I add to a suitable...

    bsdinstall - testers wanted

Last I checked, bsdinstall is scriptable; everything is implemented as a bunch of shell commands. It should therefore be not too difficult to modify bsdinstall to install with whatever parameters you like! The one thing that would be cool is automatic configuration of link-aggregation for...

Logitech F310 gamepad configuration for mupen64plus

I have a Logitech F310 USB gamepad. It's actually part of the reason I switched to FreeBSD in the first place, since it works under FreeBSD but not Linux (yes, really, and yes, I tried lots of things). I wanted to use it with the mupen64plus emulator, but mupen doesn't have a way to configure...

Sharing a filesystem between FreeBSD and OS X

The replies here seem encouraging: http://groups.google.com/group/zfs-macos/browse_thread/thread/c8bf149188d71080 I will probably go with ZFS! That is good. The only problem is that it will be hard to deal with Sigur Ros albums and all the weird characters that go into the filenames...
