jail_www_rootdir in rc.conf differs from your fstab entries. The problem is there's no /etc in jail_www_rootdir.

This is a long shot but have you tried adding something like this in dovecot-sql.conf? user_query = SELECT home, uid, gid FROM users WHERE userid = '%n' AND domain = '%d'

Is there a reason not to do the HAST and CARP magic on the hosts and not jails? If the jails are on a loopback interface this should be pretty straightforward. Then there would be only one IP to "carp".

As your log shows Dovecot doesn't know how users should be authenticated. The usual authentication methods are included in the dovecot-example.conf. You could use it as a template and just comment out or delete the irrelevant lines.
