    Upgrade path 8.0 to 8.3

Thank you for the replies @dave and @kpa. During my last upgrade (7.2 to 8.0) I did rebuild all my ports with portupgrade -f ruby\* && rm /var/db/pkg/pkgdb.db and portupgrade -afc. Does this mean that I should be good to begin the 8.3 upgrade? Also, how do I determine which ports WILL...

    Upgrade path 8.0 to 8.3

I posted this in the Installation and Maintenance of Ports, as an additional question to my original posting (about ports). However I thought it might be better suited to ask the new question here. Here is the upgrade path that I was planning for my upgrade from 8.0 to 8.3. Please let me now...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

Thank you again for your reply @ShelLuser. I actually ended up reverting my snapshot back to the pre 8.3 upgrade. I was going to give it a fresh go again tomorrow morning. Also, here is my upgrade path. Any tips or tricks you can share? freebsd-update -r 8.3-RELEASE upgrade freebsd-update...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

Thank you for the reply @ShelLuser. Earlier I did uninstall/reinstall libxml2 to no avail. I deleted the php-5.4.15.tar.bz2 file, and ran the make clean make build commands as you suggested. It does proceed to download the .tar.bz2 file, but again fails at the same point. So I am still dead in...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

After the update to 8.3, the only thing that failed to start was apache. I ran portmaster -r apache. It successfully rebuilds apache, however it fails when rebuilding php5. Here is the output: Configuring extensions checking size of long... (cached) 4 checking size of int... (cached) 4...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

The reason I asked was because after the upgrade, stunnel wasn't working because of libz.so.4. I ran pkg_info -r stunnel, and deinstall/reinstalled the dependency openssl, as well as stunnel. It still complained about the missing library. Once the 8.3 upgrade completes, I will give it a go...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

Thank you @kpa. Recompiling ports is just deinstall/reinstall correct?

Thank you @SirDice. Actually running that upgrade now :)

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

Thank you for the replies. @ShelLuser: I thought that when you rebuild your ports, it automatically rebuilds your libraries. Or each time that I upgrade I will need to check dependencies and install/reinstall? Additionally, when I check the dependencies for stunnel I see openssl. I have...

    Post-Upgrade Questions 7.2 to 8.0

I recently upgraded my system using freebsd-update from 7.2 to 8.0. Along the way I also ran portupgrade -afc to upgrade all my ports. After a final reboot, I noticed a bunch of things failed to start. For example, Apache complained about missing libcrypt.so.4. I updated my ports tree with...

    Samba /etc/rc.conf

Saved me a bunch of searching on this one too. Thanks!

    Colorizing Login Shell

Thank you for the information. That does make a lot of sense! And a lot of stupidity on my part :) I set my root shell to use /bin/csh. I verified that logging in as root does pull information from ~/.cshrc. I will try to avoid logging in as root, and this does help to clarify things. Thank you...

    Colorizing Login Shell

Also, to touch on what you said fonz; what is the difference between logging in with the shell set to bash vs. an interactive shell. Please forgive my ignorance. Thank you.

    Colorizing Login Shell

Thank you for the replies guys. What should root's default shell be?

    Colorizing Login Shell

I have a question about adding color to my shells. I may just be confused on what I'm doing, so please be gentle! I have my root login set to use bash. I edit my .bashrc file to include some color for the login prompt. However when I log in, there is no change. Now when I edit the .profile...

    Post-Installation Questions

Nice anomie. That's exactly what I've been looking for. Right now my BSD server is running on my ESX server, so I've been able to create good images of it for base lining, testing, etc. If you have any more hardening steps, please let me know. Thanks!

    Post-Installation Questions

Thanks for the reply anomie. My goal is to learn more on BSD and just to basically have a better understanding of it. My last BSD box ran Nagios, so it was mainly utilized for network monitoring. But essentially just to have a better understanding of how to baseline manage BSD. I know that may...

    Post-Installation Questions

Hi all, I just have some basic 'noobish' questions about the configuration of BSD. I have recently switched from 5.5 to 7.1 when a friend explained to me that I was "wayyyy" behind. So the initial install is complete, and I wanted to be sure I was taking proper steps in the post-configuration...

    Connection Attempt to UDP Messages

Hmm, I read the man for syslog, and the "-a" switch does do what you say. However I'm using rsyslogd. "-a" for rsyslog allows additional sockets to listen on. Unfortunately I did not see any similar switches in the rsyslog man.
