@phpwolf: I also have an Asus laptop (A53SV). Specs are very similar to yours. GNOME is running fine for me, so I think the patches should work on your laptop, too. Steps: Grab 10-CURRENT using csup or SVN Apply the latest all.X.Y.patch in http://people.freebsd.org/~kib/drm/ Rebuild world and...

CPU Overheating on Compaq laptop + FreeBSD 9.0-rc2

I am using 10-CURRENT. The fan on my Asus laptop is also spinning like crazy. I have powerd on, and it's idle. Seem to remember that 8.2-RELEASE was perfectly fine.

Looking for 8 port SAS/SATA RAID card

I'm looking for a controller for 8 SAS HDDs. The disks are destined to use ZFS, so JBOD should be enough. Does anyone have suggestions for controllers that work well?

Specs for a dedicated FreeBSD Server

It might be better to buy more drives, e.g. 4x 1 TB and use raidz. Downside is that this will cost more. Creating a pool from a single HDD is a bit risky (I've lost all my data in such a setup).

    Horrible iSCSI (istgt) performance

There are many ways of tuning ZFS. There isn't a best method as setups vary. Try searching the mailing lists since many people have posted tuning stuff (especially Jeremy Chadwick).

How to safely remove work files?

    Another Flash Player post

Chrome supports Flash because it bundles Adobe Flash Player, so it's actually the same thing as downloading it manually and installing it.

LibreOffice is quite big as well, but it somehow manages to compile a lot faster than OpenOffice.org, so it might be worth a try.

As far as I know, there isn't a preferred location. Including the URL is what most people do.

    Distributed filesystem

Some pages that may help: GlusterFS Gluster 2.0.9 under FreeBSD It seems that an older version of GlusterFS may work although there might be some bugs to iron out. It is also possible that someone may be working on a new port. Try asking on the freebsd-ports@ mailing list to see if anyone is...
