Talking About free drivers... AMD/ATI Radeon driver, is one of those cases. It performs really good, and sometimes better than fglrx on Linux. However, sometimes, incompatibilities with MESA make some games glitch, or even crash (i.e. Serious Sam 3).

There are some ambiguous ideas about blobs. I saw some comments stating that some drivers are blobs just because contain fpga netlists (i.e. creative sound cards drivers). This is just really bad. In the same way, microcode updates could.be considered as blobs too.

Check if Composition is turned off in XFCE settings. Probably that xorg driver is not completely polished and alpha blending, and 3d effects are not working well

Use the smallest available resolution that fits your screen. Also, try to use the lowest bpp available (15 or 16 bits or 8 bits if you need some extra speed), that saves a lot of memory and operations. Turn off composition and related effects and eye candy, turn off vsync, and CPU power saving...

I remember that I fixed it changing the locale. By default, Locale is "C". You have to change it to a valid locale (i.e. "en-US" ) in /etc/rc.conf. x11/gnome3 does not set any locale, not like other DE's
