How not to install a new user...

For stupid mistakes here is one of my own. It happened some months ago. One of my operating systems in this big desktop machine is Windows 10. It was originally upgraded over older Windows 7. That was quite nice but it produced some issues. Like not being able easily to install various drivers...

    Any gamers out there?

PC-gamer here, worst thing about it, is need to have Windows on hard drive. Though I'm not an ideological Windows hater.

    FreeBSD 11.0 is here!

Installed it now for real. And I'd say thank god for these forums and various other sources. Basic installation and configuration was easy, but getting it work just as I wanted was particularly not. But now all seems to work satisfactorily.

    Solved Certified hard drive blanking

Some years ago guy in my shooting club brought couple of old HDD's to shooting range and encouraged us all to shoot them. He worked on data rescue&destruction company and they had little wager could they recover anything usable from drives. And they had access to somewhat expensive and exotic...

    Installed FreeBSD 11 RC3 as VM :)

Yes, I have mostly installed what ever I wanted with command line pkg-tools anyway, and usually used quite little those GUI-based configuration tools. So my habits generally are such that switching seems not to be overwhelming issue anymore.

    Installed FreeBSD 11 RC3 as VM :)

I have been for years PC-BSD user, but now since they changed project to TrueOS, and based it on FreeBSD-CURRENT, I have become somewhat sceptical about it. So I deciced to check out real alternative, normal FreeBSD. And I must say I'm most positively surprised. It has been years since I last...

    Backdoors in my OS?

Hmm Windows asks do you want to give this or that software privileged access without any explanations WHAT it will do, FreeBSD or Linux asks for root privileges to run process without giving no explanations what it will do. On that regard they perform quite same way.

    FreeBSD more like Chrome OS?

Hmm for desktop use, if you want FreeBSD why not PC-BSD it's makers have done quite many years of work to get it work properly and nowadays using it is pretty decent experience. Assuming you have hardware fully supported by FreeBSD.

Will systemd make FreeBSD more popular?

Hmm just little comment about desktop computers: There is one not so small niche group using desktop computers too. Pc-gamers. While people have predicted death of pc as gaming platform since at least Playstation 1, Pc gaming seems to be quite hard to kill. There are quite many game genres not...

    Fun with Math

Multi kiloton range of explosion, as all that velocity mass would be converted to energy. Kilogram of mass-energy is about 20 megatons of tnt. 11 grams is then about 220 kt of tnt, easily enough to flatten small city or seriously hurt big one.

    Fun with Math

Some artist made with a "little bit" less energetic process nice kind of works. He took steelplates, some leaves and that kind of flattish objects and added thinly some high explosive. After explosion images of leaves and so on were imprinted to the steel plate. Nice looking things.

On the desktop: FreeBSD vs PC-BSD vs Debian

Since PC-BSD changed its update model to use ZFS snapshot features and boot-environments I haven't ever got to situation where I need to reinstall system. Before that, yes update system was horrific and had good chance of messing up your system. Nowadays it is mostly small annoying problems...

    FreeBSD shutdown question and more...

Hmm I don't use "pure" FreeBSD, instead of it use PC-BSD, but it has same kind of problem some files I copy to NTFS disks do not seem to properly copy. I found some nice way to make sure that such files are truly written down on NTFS disks. Run as root command sync before shutting down your...

Will systemd make FreeBSD more popular?

I can recommend PC-BSD, it has improved quite much, especially most recent update did lot of good. Generally most problems nowadays are on growing pains side. Usually when new upgrade comes it breaks things, and seem to be a bit undertested. Now when they have automatic boot-environment creation...

Converting FreeBSD UFS to Linux ZFS

I have once rescued my home-folder from borked PC-BSD installation by using ZFS-on-Linux on Ubuntu 14.04. It sort of worked, not very seamless exprerience but it worked. I'd not recommend it as anything but way to rescue your files. Use native filesystems for Linux, as ZFS-on-Linux is not...

    Switching from Arch to FreeBSD

PC-BSD uses Grub directly without chainloading, it just gives right arguments for Grub to do its work...something like this: submenu "PC-BSD (default) - 2014-07-01 17:26" { menuentry "Normal Bootup" { insmod zfs search --no-floppy -s -l tank kfreebsd /ROOT/default/@/boot/kernel/kernel...

    FreeBSD + Win7 + GRUB

Grub2 should be in ports, and for example PC-BSD uses it, so I think installing and using grub should be possible...

    Switching from Arch to FreeBSD

Umm why not simply use two separate hdd's each with their own bootblock, and simply choose from BIOS/UEFI menu which one is used on boot up? That is the way I did it. One HDD brings Linux grub, giving access to Linux and Windows7, other brings PC-BSD grub, giving access to PC-BSD and Windows7.

Internet Connection Speeds (Was: Articles Worth Reading)

Here Internet access is provided mostly by private ISP's, but cable owners are obligated to allow access for competitors. So if for example TeliaSonera owns local cables, it may not prevent Elisa from offering Internet service to customers. And it may not demand outrageous rent rates either. So...

Internet Connection Speeds (Was: Articles Worth Reading)

100 Mbit/s for 40 euros, and static IP? That's very cheap. I have had 100 Mbit/s up/down included in my rent, but the IP is dynamic. Soon when I'm moving the connection would be 21 Mbit/s down, 4 Mbit/s up, dynamic IP. And the cost would be 21 euros per month.
