    Ubuntu follows Debian to Systemd

2c. The "other" Unix platforms should just not do what Linux does, and either do their own thing, or attempt to be more compatible with OS X. Love or hate apple, much of what they have done with OS X has been "the right way" (IMHO), and I suspect that if OS X wins the Unix desktop war (and at...

pf firewall - cry for help

To understand what you're actually doing with pf or any other firewall it will be beneficial to learn what the IP stack is and an overview of how it works. This may help: http://www.ipprimer.com/overview.cfm The configuration syntax is the easy part - knowing what you are trying to do and...

    Hybrid Drives (SSHD)

I've run a Momentus XT 750 in my MacBook Pro for a year. I like. I don't think I'd buy a regular hard drive again, if there was a hybrid in the size I was looking for. It's not completely SSD fast, but it boots quick (cold boot in 12-13 seconds from power button press, including the OS X EFI...

I'm getting ready to install Window Manager

Not anymore (if you're on Mountain Lion or possibly Lion onwards - you'll need to install Xquartz).

    Help! RAID-Z1 with no parity?

Assuming parity is calculated on a bit by bit basis, then the "parity" of a single disk will simply be the bitwise inverse (if parity has to be odd) or the same data (if parity has to be even). I'm not sure how ZFS parity information works, but that's the only way I can think of to re-construct...

FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE: Can not boot a x86 PAE kernel

I'd take the time spent trying to make PAE work, and spend the time looking for discarded hardware of 64 bit nature. I myself have now decommissioned 2 generations of machine that are 64 bit capable, I'd wager picking something up that CAN use more than 4 GB of RAM and run x64 will not break...

FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE: Can not boot a x86 PAE kernel

If you purchased ATOM with the intent of using more than 4 GB of RAM, you're "doing it wrong".

FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE: Can not boot a x86 PAE kernel

If you're still using non-x64 capable hardware, I'd suggest you're also at the point where you should be planning for hardware failure in any case. Yeah, it sucks, but even intel had EM64T machines available in 2004 - with the mainstream intel CPUs being x64 capable in 2007.

    500TB fileserver?

Danger, Danger! I'd still chase quotes for the "Rolls Royce" solutions, so that you can provide them for comparison. Also, if you were to be the one to maintain the storage solution, include estimates (and double your initial estimate) as to the impact on your time to support roll-your-own...

    Best practice: jails

2c. KISS Keep it simple, stupid. If you have IP address space available, I'd use option A, as to me it seems cleaner, less complex network configuration wise (thus, less prone to error) and more "self contained".

    500TB fileserver?

So your data would cost quite a lot of man hours/$ to re-generate then? That data sounds kind of important, if it was me, I wouldn't be trying to cheap out on it too much - I'd focus on attempting to provide the most reliable solution possible and if the budget is too big, then work out ways it...

    500TB fileserver?

The other questions I would have are: What is this going to be used for? If you're looking to use it for VM storage, you will want to consider whether or not VMware/Hyper-V/etc. certification is important (this is a business decision I suspect). Is Windows based VSS snapshot support (for...

Are you still using the old pkg_* packages?

I'm not sure if I voted, but I'm currently running old pkg tools on my production boxes (8.3) and will switch to PKGNG when I upgrade them to 10.1 (VMs, so I'll rebuild side by side and then migrate service).

    Silly defaults in packages....

MySQL = GPL, and FreeBSD does not want to include or link to GPL software if possible. PostgreSQL = BSD compatible license Also, PostgreSQL = better.

Apple's OS X Launchd is being ported to FreeBSD

Because XML is extensible, XML parsers are commodity software and already well tested and debugged, etc. You're not meant to be editing XML with a text editor primarily (although you can easily enough - no more difficult than editing HTML really) - but it makes writing administration tools a...

FreeBSD 10 - worst release ever?

"Worst" release ever would be 5.0.

    500TB fileserver?

At that sort of scale, if you don't know what you're doing I would strongly suggest hiring someone who does. To ensure such a setup is reliable, you will want redundant controllers, networking (multiple 10 Gb-E ports), etc. Yes, an EMC or NetApp (for example) may look expensive on paper, but...

Will FreeBSD merge with other BSDs?

Keep reading the mail archive, without reading until the end you really don't get the full picture.
