can't boot from USB if i make the filesystem from scratch

I've tried both MBR and GPT, both with the same result. What command can I run to display the current configuration or partition table or whatever, then I'll reinstall using the broken method and run the same command to compare?

can't boot from USB if i make the filesystem from scratch

I have an HP thinclient that I want to boot from a USB stick. I downloaded the memstick installer, wrote it to a second USB stick, and installed FreeBSD on the first USB stick using the standard install process. Here's the problem: Attempting to boot off the first USB stick, the computer...

Installation on an external hard drive hangs during POST.

Yes, I was finally able to get it to work with gpt, but the method I used I would not recommend for you.

Installation on an external hard drive hangs during POST.

Sounds like the same problem I'm having: http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=29058 To boot a recovery CD, start the computer without the hard drive attached. When FreeBSD is finished booting, then connect the external drive. Also, take a look at flashrom. It can write BIOS flash...

can't boot when partitioned with gpart

For right now, I side-stepped the issue by dd'ing the FreeBSD installation USB drive that I used, then resized using gpart resize and grew the filesystem. I do have another thin client that I am going to be setting up similarly so if I run in to the same problem, I'll post again.

can't boot when partitioned with gpart

The problem I'm trying to solve is that when I partition my USB thumb drive using gpart or with a GPT scheme, my computer will not go past the BIOS logo. Posting the error message about usr missing doesn't help diagnose the problem because that error message only shows up when I unplug the...

can't boot when partitioned with gpart

I know that labels work with GPT. I was asking if they work with MBR. yes, I am. Also, when the installer creates the partitions for me, it creates the freebsd-boot partition. I know I'm doing it right because if I disconnect the USB thumb drive the freebsd FreeBSD boots, but then complains...

can't boot when partitioned with gpart

I am trying to install FreeBSD 9 on an HP t5730 thin client. If I use the installer to manually partition the internal flash hard drive (1 GB, /) and a USB thumb drive (32 GB, /usr) using MBR, it boots correctly. It will also boot correctly if I use fdisk. The computer will NOT boot if I...

    /dev/ada0s1a missing

Thanks for the suggestion. Running that command revealed that the disk was being detected as GPT, but that it was corrupt. I had originally made the disk MBR, so that would explain the problem. I destroyed the GPT, re-created the MBR table, and now everything works great. Thanks!

    /dev/ada0s1a missing

fdisk reports that partition 1 is a FreeBSD partition, but the only thing that shows up in /dev is ada0. there is no ada0s1 or ada0s1a. I know there is a slice and a partition there because it's my /boot and the system does boot, but /boot fails to mount and I get dropped to single user mode...

expand ZFS partition at the front

You're right, it's not worth the effort to reclaim 2 gig from each drive. But I'm not doing this on a practical setup. I'm just learning about ZFS and am curious if it would be possible. Theoretically, it should be possible, right? Just move the root node and adjust the pointers on all of the...

expand ZFS partition at the front

I have no idea how this happened but I have a ZFS pool where each disk in the pool has partition 2 allocated to ZFS. Partition 1 is a 2 GB swap space. I wanted ZFS to use the whole device. The only way I can think of to fix the problem is to offline each vdev and replace it with that same...

no CPU frequency scaling on AMD Sempron 2100

That's interesting. WikiPedia says it does not support PowerNow, but AMD docs do. My goal here is to get the heat output down. But if I can't, then I can't, so I won't. Thanks guys!

no CPU frequency scaling on AMD Sempron 2100

I haven't put any other OS on this box so i don't know if it was working before or not. There are no options in the BIOS for Powernow or Cool'N'Quiet. sysctl dev | grep freq returns nothing.

no CPU frequency scaling on AMD Sempron 2100

I have 9.0-RC3 installed on an HP Thin Client that has a Mobile AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 2100+. I am trying to get cpufreq and powerd to manage the frequency of the processor, but I'm not having any luck. Here's some lines from dmesg: FreeBSD 9.0-RC3 #0: Sun Dec 4 08:56:36 UTC 2011...
