Installing FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro 7,1...it is a mid 2010 model

I downloaded the FreeBSD 9 current dvd1.iso. I booted it and got this error. Manual root filesystem specification: <fstype>:<device> [options] Mount <device> using filesystem <fstype> and with the specified (optional) option list. eg. ufs:/dev/da0s1a zfs:tank ...

    How big should /var/tmp be?

I plan on installing a couple of programs using source code: FireFox, AbiWord, Xfce, etc. How big should I make my /var/tmp? I'd also like to download the source code for the FreeBSD kernel. Does FreeBSD install source into /var/tmp?

Installing FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro 7,1...it is a mid 2010 model

Where can you find the install disc for FreeBSD 9? Can you post me a link or tell me where to find it on the FreeBSD website? Which FreeBSD install file did you burn to a cd: the LiveFS file or the disc file? And would you mind telling me how to use gpart on fixit? I'm not sure how to partition...

Installing FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro 7,1...it is a mid 2010 model

Scratch that last question. I just read that "You cannot install FreeBSD in an extended partition made by Linux (or DOS)." AKA I've gotta use FreeBSD's "fixit" program to do it.

    Best Light Weight FreeBSD Browser

The reason you had a problem with the Paypal transaction on the www/surf browser is probably because www/surf isn't capable of a 128-bit encryption, which is what Paypal uses. I know the newer versions of Google Chrome, Firefox, and I'm assuming Chromium browser (because that basically is Google...

What Plugins are needed in a Web Browser

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've gotta say The FreeBSD community ROCKS! But I do have one more question. From what I understand I can use three different versions of Firefox and I want to know what one would be fastest: Version 1: The Packaged Version of Firefox browser. It's got every plugin...

    Making FreeBSD BLAZING Fast

Ever heard of Puppy Linux? Apparently it loads the entire operating system into RAM. That means that when you boot up Puppy Linux and open up LibreOffice Writer, Abiword, Firefox, or any application, it just opens insanely fast, because it doesn't have the load the application into RAM. The...

Installing FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro 7,1...it is a mid 2010 model

I've got a Broadcom 43224. According to the FreeBSD 8.2 hardware release notes, the bwi driver should support the Broadcom 43xx. Does that mean the bwi driver will support my broadcom card?

    Maximizing a Custom Kernel

I'm planning on eventually building a custom kernel for my computer (as soon as I get FreeBSD on it). My question is this. Is an entirely monolithic custom-ly built kernel (that has no modules) better than a custom kernel that uses as many modules as possible? Let me explain that better...

What Plugins are needed in a Web Browser

If you're running firefox, and you type in your address bar: "about:plugins" a long list will pop up that will show you all the plugins you have enabled in your firefox browser. I want your opinion. What are the NEEDED plugins? Will disabling plugins make your browser faster? P.S. Steve Jobs...

Nevermind I just figure it out. ia64 is for Itanium processors, which I don't have.

Is ia64 the same as amd64?

What's the difference between the FreeBSD ia64 and amd64 ISO files? I know my computer is a 64bit, but which platform is right for my computer: ia64 or amd64?? P.S. I've got a MacBook 7,1 if that helps.

Installing FreeBSD on my MacBook Pro 7,1...it is a mid 2010 model

Like the title of this thread suggests, I'm trying to install FreeBSD on a MacBook Pro 7,1 but I'm having trouble finding out if FreeBSD supports my hardware. I know it supports my wireless, audio, and Core 2 Duo processor, but I'm having some difficulty finding anything else. So I could use...

    Installing FreeBSD from cd troubles

Ok, so I tried downloading the memstick.img file using the Ubuntu live cd. Didn't work. I ran out of enough RAM to download it. So using windows on another computer. I burnt the livefs.iso onto a cd, booted, and tried entering fixit, like the guide says to do. Didn't work. I also tried entering...

    Installing FreeBSD from cd troubles

I already deleted the OS-X on my computer. Mainly because I only want to run on computer on free software. So I can't use OS-X or use "dd". How else can I use the memstick file to create a bootable USB? (I do have a functioning Ubuntu live cd that I can use.)

    Installing FreeBSD from cd troubles

Hey, thanks for putting that link in. I tried following that guide you sent me, and being a newbie I got stuck. Fast. So here's what I did. I tried doing the "FreeBSD-only Installation with ZFS" as posted in the link you sent me. Here's the catch. I downloaded the "8.0 LiveFS memstick"...

    Installing FreeBSD from cd troubles

I downloaded the FreeBSD*disc1.iso, burned it, and booted my Mac Book Pro 7,1 with it. When I got to the partition step of the installation, the cd couldn't find my hard drive. It said to check the "FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE Hardware Notes" for tips. Where would that document list which hard drives...
