Surprised to learn that the BSDs are dying

All hearsay should be ignored. If you want to know how well an OS is doing, track down some objective facts, such as the fact that the Netflix CDN is built on FreeBSD, along with numerous commercial and open source network and storage appliances, or how much software is ported to it. According...

    passwd will not change password

I'm not seeing anything in the ports tree with bin/passwd in pkg-plist. If you can't explain how /usr/local/bin/passwd came to be, you'll want to verify that you haven't been hacked. A fake passwd command in the default PATH is a good candidate for a Trojan.

    desktop-installer

Are you referring to https://github.com/outpaddling/desktop-installer/issues/24? What led you to believe it was removed and there was no response? At any rate, this issue was fixed in ports head Jan 30 and merged back to quarterly ports Feb 2. Best, JB

    Solved Is Lumina considered stable?

    Solved Is Lumina considered stable?

I've been using Lumina as my primary desktop for years and can attest to its stability and remarkable speed. There are some open issues such as resizing under VirtualBox and frequent fluxbox crashes (that are worked around by automatically restarting, so you may not even notice until you see...

How to Install and run KDE

Actually, there's really no difference in setup between a desktop env and a simple window manager from the end-user's perspective. It's pretty much pkg install kde5 vs pkg install openbox The kde5 port/package does most of the DE-specific work for you. Most other aspects are the same...

    ROCK64 microSD and eMMC

I ordered a USB 3.0 eMMC module writer from Ameridroid and copied the ROCK64 image onto my eMMC module from a FreeBSD laptop. After doing this, I was able to boot from the microSD *and* access the eMMC. So the jumper does not disable the eMMC completely. Apparently it only disables booting...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

Adding a new port to quarterly (the subject of the "not as stable" link) is not a problem. The thing that is essentially forbidden in a MFH is a change to an existing port that breaks compatibility with other ports in the branch. Your concern about the few days it takes to generate packages...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

The drm-kmod issue was actually what prompted me to develop auto-mark-install-from-source and the accompanying functionality in auto-update-system. This allowed full updates without breaking Xorg via the following: auto-mark-install-from-source graphics/drm-fbsd12.0-kmod kbi With this...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

No, he won't have problems with this simple scenario as long as he keeps everything up-to-date: pkg upgrade cd /usr/ports && git pull cd multimedia/libdvdcss && make clean deinstall reinstall It's that simple and many people do this sort of thing regularly without ever having an issue. or...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

Nobody said is was inevitable for every user. The conditions under which it cannot be avoided have been clearly stated twice now. So Joe Ubuntu user decides to try out FreeBSD. He quickly installs most of what he needs using binary packages and is pretty satisfied with the experience. Now he...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

Reiterating the original statement that's inexplicably under attack here: "Mixing is unavoidable if you use binary packages but want something that cannot be packaged for licensing or other reasons..." This is obvious, not controversial. If there is no binary package, you have to build from...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

I said "If you use binary packages ... mixing is inevitable". How does the fact that you don't have to use binary packages invalidate this statement? <<<ROOT@barracuda.uits>>> /home/bacon 1035 # pkg install libdvdcss Updating FreeBSD repository catalogue... FreeBSD repository is up to date...

Questions from the "About ports and (binary) packages" howto

Mixing is unavoidable if you use binary packages but want something that cannot be packaged for licensing or other reasons, such as libdvdcss. Until recently, some very common tools like faac, lame, and exfat were also not available as binary packages. Fortunately, restrictions tend to become...

    ROCK64 microSD and eMMC

I'm wondering if it's possible to boot from a microSD and have access to the eMMC module at the same time. I found the eMMC jumper, which enables booting from the SD while the eMMC is present, but the eMMC is not accessible. I believe the jumper might be disabling it entirely. I haven't found...

general/other Issue(s) booting FreeBSD 12.2 aarch64 on Parallels Desktop on Apple Silicon

Bummer. Hopefully someone else with an M1 will spot this thread and have a look. Mouse issues can also be video-driver related and solved by switching to software cursor. Both moused and software-sursor are default-on options in desktop-installer for this reason.
