GAG not booting FreeBSD from SATA drive

FYI, when trying to boot FreeBSD 8-RELEASE from GAG (1st and only SATA drive, 4th slice, ad4s4a), I get: Invalid partition Invalid partition No /boot/loader boot: then I pass: 0:ad(4,4,a)/boot/kernel/kernel First line I get is: WARNING: loader(8) metadata is missing! Then the loading...

Portsnap not working in jail with NAT

I've tried the jail package builder route recently, and I've had no luck either making the jail to communicate to the exterior. http://www.jeroen.se/articles/freebsd_jail_laptop_dhcp.php I've as so far as reduce pf.conf to this three liner nat on ath0 from 10.1.1.0/24 to any -> ath0...

    New to the BSD world

About that point, truth is wine has made giant steps, but a full 8 years (in a few days) of XP uninterrupted stable realm really helped. This means vendors keep producing win32 code for drivers and software. This particular condition has worked to wine's benefit, particularly within linux since...

    New to the BSD world

Hrm, I have KDE4, XFCE4 and WindowMaker working on -STABLE fairly well in the same machine, all added through packages. There are well documented ways to add up DE's and setting up startx or a login manager. From my experience, users coming from linux need to set aside for a lil' bit their...

    Flash on FreeBSD

As wnsi-m2 says, just follow 6.2.3 (Firefox and Macromedia® Flash™ Plugin) of the Handbook browser's section. Follow the 8.X instructions if you use 7.2-STABLE. There's a thread on the Howto's that address this same issue.

I game too, and 'fine' under wine'd linux-emulation is not prime. If you use *NIX, and game as well, you have custom windows installation in it's own drive, running at 100% native performance, dedicated and secured just for that purpose. Or buy a videogame console, your pick. This thread just...

Does FreeBSD use the linux Kernel?

My guess is he is. @Willrandship. The FreeBSD kernel is a beast of its own, with its own issues, far different from the ones you get with the linux one. Read the second link you've been replied. Seriously.

    UFS Backup

Though I find your guide very enlightening and concise, personally I find myself very uncomfortable with dump. As other users have stated, doing either one-shot or incremental backups with tar, copying/cloning entire filesystems with tar, or plain old dd, seems to work best for both low and...

How to get kde4 applications appear in XFCE 4 menu

This quick guide's purpose is making appear all the KDE4 application menu items in XFCE 4's menu, with no wrapper scripts (which is the way I wanted). I still haven't figured how to do pass these arguments directly and globally in a xfce-specific config file. I assume you're using a modern...

    Xorg Keyboard mapping

    A problem for uploading permission

That's weird, with an umask 022, you should be creating new files as 755 (with read-execute permissions for all other users). What is the output of grep umask /etc/login_conf /home/useraccount/.login_conf?

HOW TO: Flash10 plugin, Firefox3 and FreeBSD 7.2 or higher

The symlink I did in order for nspluginwrapper to work as advertised was the one indicated on section 6.2.3 of the Handbook My guess is that from 7.2 onward, this is the desired behavior.
