Information on a Git or Mercury versioned Ports System

Thank you, very much @SirDice! That was extremely helpful - quite insightful! If I gather the contents of the document correctly, it seems that the main reasons are (aside from the technical aspects of git and hg cited in the article): That to apply git or hg to the source tree would require...

Information on a Git or Mercury versioned Ports System

Hello all, Having done some searching on this issue for some time now, and haven discovered no definitive answer, I figured that this would be the best place to ask this question. I, like most of you use prefer to use the ports system when installing a particular application. Lately, I have...

Portsnap - Requested Range not satisfiable

Thank you, everyone! @ShelLuser's suggestion worked perfectly. I can also report that while using portsnap didn't work (because the ports snapshot was corrupted on the server), installing and updating the ports tree via subversion (following this link...

Portsnap - Requested Range not satisfiable

Hello all, I am having trouble with portsnap. I have a fresh install of FreeBSD 9.0 without the port tree installed from disk - because I intended to download a fresh copy using portsnap. However, when I use portsnap I keep getting this mysterious error: portsnap fetch Looking up...

    Is the libexecinfo port down?

Hi everyone, Can anyone verify that the libexecinfo port is down for FreeBSD 9.0-RELEASE? I am trying to install some software that depends on it, but for whatever reason, fetch keeps timing out. I did a check on all my FTP ports, and they ping to the main FreeBSD site just fine. I also tried...

Help me - Dual boot windows 7 and FreeBSD

[Note: I claim no responsibility for any loss of data over what is suggested.] This is a quick outline of what you will have to do: 1. If you have one hard drive, shrink the current Windows partition: Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management. Click on Storage ->...

What have you learned from using FreeBSD?

Technologically wise, I have learned more about the innermost workings of Unix than I would have had I used Linux or some other *nix system. Examples: compilation from source, customizing software for a particular architecture to obtain peak binary performance, building and using custom...

How do you guys clean your servers?

I have worked with a couple of production servers and a lot of off-the-shelf machines. Generally, compressed air and wipes/Q-tips lightly soaked in methanol do the best work. Note: always wear a static wrist band or ground yourself prior to cleaning any components of the server.

Getting the libraries installed by a port

Hi falkman, I tried running your script on an uninstalled port, (in my case, /usr/ports/x11/xorg, since I run a headless server), and I obtained no results. Although, I did obtain this message: if: Empty if. And, yes - I want to know what .so files will be installed by a port (without having...

Getting the libraries installed by a port

Thank you both: DutchDaemon and falkman for your replies. Apologies, if I wasn't clear enough earlier. What I wanted to know a way of determining what libraries will be installed by a particular port (preferably, without having to install the port). From both of your replies, it seems there is...

    Difference between FreeBSD and PC-BSD

To elaborate on what SirDice said, the difference between the two is that of PC-BSD has configurations for on-the-fly USB mounting and a lot of background scripts to make the overall functionality more user-friendly. Example: in FreeBSD, you can either download the binary of a program via the...

Getting the libraries installed by a port

Hi FreeBSD Community, [Apologies to the admins, because this is more of an open-ended question and this seemed to be the best place to place this topic.] My problem is what some could consider to be fairly simple, but it is one that I have, (for the moment) obtained no solution: Is there a...

    [REQUEST] FreeBSD Channel on YouTube

First, thank you all for taking the time from your busy schedules to read and comment on my request. With regard to the following: I agree wholeheartedly. That channel was one I had uncovered in trying to find FreeBSD and *BSD related content. I am not bashing anyone, and the last thing I...

    [REQUEST] FreeBSD Channel on YouTube

Greetings all, I will begin by saying first and foremost that I am a UNIX and FreeBSD n00b. While that is not news per se, it is through those trials and tribulations as such a n00b that the aforementioned topic occurred to me. People on the whole are visual. In like manner, although a...
