Go to sysinstall's rescue console (by pressing Alt-F4) and check out usb availability
(if dmesg is available at this phase):

You can create one shared directory and symlinked it to every user's home directory. So, nobody can access files from other home directory and all users have (rw) access to "some_shared" directory.
It's would you like?
You may add (uncomment) in /usr/local/etc/pure-ftpd.conf next line
ChrootEveryone yes
to limit users his home direcotory.
You can add (uncomment) line
TrustedGID 100
to allow user with id<100 (for example, root) access to all file system (but, IMHO, would't do...
Don't you change IDE mode setting in bios while replacing the drive? somewhat like LBA, CHS and so on? If not, it may be you must lower the OFFSET value for all partiotions for 47, so your disk go look like:
# /dev/ad3s1:
8 partitions:
# size offset fstype [fsize bsize bps/cpg]...
H-m-m.
I will try connect through Putty with Remote Command set to "/bin/sh". Thus I will have "/bin/sh" as a shell, not a bash. (I hope:)
Then "su root -c /bin/sh".
It's seem to be work, but with working bash.
Just now I havn't brocken bash to test my idea.
I use bash for root. When I boot in single mode, so /usr/local/bin/bash is unavailable, my intelligent system prompt me for login shell and suggest /bin/sh. I allways agree.
If it's 5 minute task then use sh;
elseif mount /usr; run bash;
when done reboot normal.
I think, it's no so dreadful.
IMHO, hardware depends, BIOS depends, how to BIOS emulate booting from flash: from USB-CDROM, USB-FDD, USB-HDD, installed OS depends.
What the OS you try to boot?
AFAIK, it's hardware issue to boot from flash drive greater 512Mb. Some time ago I've use 256Mb bootable flash drive with BartPE installed. All systems (that support flash boot) was able to boot from that drive. From 512Mb flash drive only half system be able to boot. From 2Gb flash only 2...
