    USB Wireless

Yeah, I'm still looking for a supported wireless card. I bought one recently that *seemed* to have support, but wound up not having any. It's kind of long homework to do...

    USB Wireless

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Unless you forgot to specify some firmware in addition to the other two files, I doubt you're going to get the card to work. I'm currently 'there' with a wireless adapter I've got as well, sorry!

    USB Wireless

That sounds like it couldn't read the inf correctly. Did you tell it to convert the inf file to...the proper encoding? (I'm forgetting the name, but it prompts for a simple yes/no) Just use ndisgen, if you can help it. I remember that being the most inclusive way.

    AF drive layout question

I'm trying to align the partitions to 4k boundaries. IIUC (if I understand correctly - a rare statement on the internet), the partitions need to start at sectors divisible by 4096 (and 512 ? ). The partitions also need to be *sizes* dividable into 4096k blocks (or is it 512*4096?) You get the...

    AF drive layout question

    Does this seem right for a 4k drive? gpart show ada1 => 34 976773101 ada1 GPT (465G) 34 30 - free - (15k) 64 32768 1 freebsd-boot (16M) 32832 4032 - free - (2M) 36864 4259840 2 freebsd-ufs (2.0G)...

Root On ZFS @ FreeBSD 9

Looks like I led you down the rabbit hole of confusion with me...sorry! (Really...really...sorry.) What I've learned, so far, is there doesn't seem to be a good way to set ashift = 12 under FreeBSD atm. Judging by when the code freeze was, I think it's possible to create a pool with ashift=12...

    ROOT on ZFS

When you say that, do you mean it's natural to see nothing but a blinking cursor at boot for quite a while? i.e. all I'm seeing at the moment is (imagine it's blinking): _ After the bios post, after following the zfs boot instructions, etc. -edit- nvm me, the gpt guide above's...

Root On ZFS @ FreeBSD 9

Umm...don't you need to tell zfs to use 4k bytes instead of 512 (for advanced format drives)? http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=21644 Or is this somehow magically taken care of in 9?

    help using windows NDIS drivers

Update: I tried loading bwi and bwn at boot. (if_bwi and if_bwn are the respective module names) bwn seemed to identify the card, but produced errors and quit without creating an interface. When done on boot, the system actually kernel paniced. So, I pulled the card. My guess is that bwn...

    help using windows NDIS drivers

I just bought a linksys wmp300N wireless pci card (aka BroadCom BCM43XNG , see references ). It doesn't look like there's a native driver (based on the man pages and google). But, I was attempting to use the windows (64 bit) drivers via ndisgen. So, I get through the interactive prompt and...

    clarification on NTFS write support

make search name=ntfs-3g didn't report anything and name=ntfs didn't report anything *obvious*. What's the name and location of the ntfs-3g port? thanks!

    OS Popularity on Wikipedia Pages

No. Long Answer: No, because there are many, many servers out there - and web hosting is only a subsection of the potential uses for a server. I've got a FreeBSD server sitting behind me that doesn't know anything about providing http services, for instance. The percentage of job listings...

    proof that Linux ***

Hmm...audacity is in ports (though I haven't used it there). In no way am I claiming much audio experience, but that seems like a really capable audio program. You make a great point, though.

    proof that Linux ***

In my not so great experience, Linux usually has better driver support than FreeBSD. But, let's face facts, not even Mac OS X has driver support to rival Windows. User interfaces aside, it's hard to run a free (beer/speech) OS in a desktop environment with limited/oddball driver support. I...

Are there any examples of people abusing the BSD licenses?

I can't speak scientifically because I have no data to corroborate this. But, I'm certainly using FreeBSD in part because of my Mac hardware. I was inspired to check out and set up a local FreeBSD server after poking around in the *nix underbelly of Mac OS X. It's possible some *BSD user-ship...

    Who uses FreeBSD?

FreeBSD as a ZFS-based file server. Works as a "Time Machine" server for my desktop and laptop, amongst other things. I also play solitair on it with pysol. ;) @wokko: Check out the networking section of this site and the FreeBSD handbook. I think you're looking for the "pf" and "ipfw"...

[netatalk] Something wrong with CNID DB

It works now, without any weird error! Of note, Leif, between your steps 4 and 5 I ran dbd -r on my shares. I don't know if this was a necessary step or not, but it seemed like a good idea to rebuild the db.
