Building the FreeBSD kernel on another OS

IanSeyler, this has been done with Linux on both Debian and Gentoo. Take a look at the following links for more information: http://www.debian.org/ports/kfreebsd-gnu/ http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gentoo-alt/bsd/fbsd/ I am sure there are probably other Linux distributions that have done...

move FreeBSD Hard Disk to another computer or system

Network/firewall settings may also need to be reviewed if the network card(s) in the new machine use a different chipset from the old machine.

    Torrent Server?

I use rtorrent + tmux for a similar application. It's not a daemon, but works well enough.

Poll: what fs do you use on your portable HD

Depends on the size. For smaller drives, I like FAT16/32 for cross-platform goodness. On larger drives, EXT3/UFS/FFS/NTFS depending on the OS it is used on.

Just setup my OpenBSD server to report stats and devices.

    cpuset for 5.3

coleb, you might be able to run the process from a jail, and limit the CPU shares for the jail. This is a little on the 'hack' side, but it may work. Upgrading to a newer version of FreeBSD would probably be your best option overall, though.

(PC-BSD 8 64bit) Medium Not Found During Boot, freezes...

If you have the time and means, perhaps you should try installing FreeBSD (from an official FreeBSD install media) and see if you have the same problems. This will let you know if it is FreeBSD or some custom PCBSD patch causing the boot problems.

    [PC-BSD] pcbsd javapbi

You should probably check with the PCBSD forum/mailing lists/irc for specific support. From what I remember about PCBSD, I believe you can go to the "main menu (KDE)->PC-BSD Settings->Remove Programs" and see if another Java PBI is installed there.

    upgrade software with portupgrade ?

I have run into a few issues in the past with dependency errors caused by mixing ports/pkgs. They can be mixed, but sometimes it causes problems. I may be wrong, but I believe it is recommended that you either use one or the other.

The handbooks title doesn't do it justice

The FreeBSD Bible? Heh. I agree though, the FreeBSD handbook has been an invaluable resource for me. I have even used it on occasion for a quick-reference from Linux systems for some cross-platform software configuration.

    FreeBSD on reiserfs

Douglasfim, I do not believe FreeBSD supports reading from/writing to ReiserFS. For installing to a zfs partition, please check here.

    [closed] ''FreeBSD Owes Apple Big''

Spreading rumors and outright lies is pretty easy to do. Doesn't bother me any, FreeBSD works great for what I need and has never failed me. If that article turns a few close-minded, rabid, fanboy-ish types away from FreeBSD...should we thank the author?

    *BSD and linux distro wars

gilinko pretty much nailed it. There are very knowledgeable people using FreeBSD, and various Linux distributions, among other computer operating systems. These people tend to have lives outside of computers and do not spend every waking minute "spreading their [OSS-]religion." It is the...

PCBSD install to USB - use PC-BSD Bootloader ?

I'm not positive, but I believe PCBSD requires 10GB of disk space or more. I do not think the installer will let you continue if your drive is smaller than 10GB. That said, I am not familiar enough with it to know how it handles the bootloader. You would be best served asking such a direct...

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

My first experience with a non-Windows system was NetBSD 1.x in the mid 90's. After using it for a while a friend introduced me to Red Hat Linux. It seemed very backwards compared to what I had learned from NetBSD. I use Ubuntu Linux from time to time on the desktop and it is nice until I have...

    Dumbest computing mistake you've made?

Shutdown wrong server in wrong building I was a newly hired junior sys admin in a mixed Windows/Linux server environment.
