Thanks SirDice. I'm now in touch with FreeBSD-X11 list with several helpful responses.
For the record, they gave me the following advice on VGA support. I was never worried about the cabling since I've had console up through HDMI routinely but it seems that when "chipset retires support for...
Thanks again SirDice I can see the situation. FreeBSD graphics team are working on 4th generation Haswell graphics. The System 76 Meerkat is Broadwell 5th Gen i3/i5/i7. I could at least get console up and I'm wondering if I could contribute to the development and testing.
I'm also looking at...
Aargh! Thanks for the warning SirDice. Does that mean GPU will not work, or is there a chance I can get it to work? I'm willing to try. Will a non-functioning GPU just cripple the machine (or just the graphics - still ok as headless?) or will it stop it?
I guess everyone probably asks does FreeBSD support hardware X. I'm waiting on System76 support to list chipsets used in their Meerkat so I can check but I'm wondering perhaps someone knows this hardware already and can confirm?
I'm not even sure if the listed amd64 support includes 5th gen...
In case it helps someone I'm successfully using the Netcomm NP910N wireless USB using the Ralink 3070 chipset which works with the run driver.
if_run_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf.

Yes, I think this is solved for me!
I'm using hint.acpi_throttle.0.disabled=1 in /boot/loader.conf as instructed and driver now seems to limit frequency levels to three of the top six: sysctl -a | grep dev.cpu.0.freq
dev.cpu.0.freq: 1650
dev.cpu.0.freq_levels: 1650/5906 1320/3487 825/1396
I'm...
Thanks, User23, I guess I only need one: the fastest. But I'm not sure I understand your comment since your post seems to reveal 16 freq_levels whereas mine has only 13. Although 13 of your pairs of numbers are all bigger than the biggest one of mine :-)
I also found the text Initializing built-in extension COMPOSITE in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
Does this mean compositing is enabled? If so, can I switch it off somehow?

Wow thanks user23 and wblock@!
I was getting dev.cpu.0.freq: 825 so I followed http://www.ateamsystems.com/tech-blog/increase-freebsd-performance-with-powerd/ and enabled powerd by adding these lines to /etc/rc.conf:
powerd_enable="YES"
powerd_flags="-a hiadaptive"
Now I get dev.cpu.0.freq...
Thanks Crivens, I did some research on powerd. I'm not sure I want it as I have a low power CPU anyway. I'm not actually running powerd. I think I must have declined it on install. # ps aux | grep power
root 1213 0.0 0.1 18820 2244 1 S+ 12:15AM 0:00.00 grep -i --color power

I didn't...
Thanks wblock and SirDice.
The mouse has delayed response at times. So I drag, but the pointer stays for a second or two and then jumps to catch up. I think this may be worse during long running big scp operations, hence I suspect the wireless network management may be sucking CPU? The mouse...
FreeBSD 10.1 runs Firefox 34.0.5 slow on X / Fluxbox on my Xi3 "Z3ro Pro" with it's 1.65GHz dual–core AMD G–series processor, Radeon HD 6320 GPU with 80 programmable cores, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and 32GB – 512GB mSATA SSD.
Can someone please tell me if this is expected or do I need to tweak? Install...
FYI when using urxvt I've hit on some combinations of urxvt config that aren't too slow. Notably documentation advises don't tint and shade at the same time because it uses excessive resources. The lineSpace resource (option -lsp) helps with 'bad' fonts to stop screen speckles but can also make...
Trying roxterm and sakura they seem to look and behave alike but I'm told sakura is lighter. I like these two. They scroll and fast and no font problems.
I can't work out the terminator. I use my ALT-drag to re-size and it gets itself into a loop and diminishes in size until it just remains a...
I've been using urxvt. I really like the tinted background and minimal scrollbar but I've got scrolling wrong somehow because it's slow and it leaves speckles everywhere but I can't figure out how to use a better font.
I just tried roxterm though and the default font is smooth and it scrolls...
Does anyone have a .SYS and .INF for Atheros AR8161 on Win XP 64 bit? I'm trying to follow the manual using ndisgen but I can't actually get hold of the INF and SYS files. Actually I've got these:
145K Feb 23 21:10 l1c51x64.cat
495K Feb 23 21:10 l1c51x64.inf
112K Feb 23 21:10 l1c51x64.sys
But I...
I don't think I understand enough to comment.
Now at FreeBSD 10.1 I find that I usually don't have to wait for pairing using the workaround described.
I'd like to find some time to do a test for normal operation, in case that's working better than it used to.
I'd like to actually understand...
I regularly pair my K810 to a Mac Mini OS X 10.6 using the F1 pairing. I don't let any other OS or device use the F3 pairing which I always switch to for FreeBSD. I don't have any problems (related to multiple OSs). I don't press the reset / connect button on the back of the keyboard.
I originally had the same bluetooth behaviour and workaround as sk8harddiefast started 40779 and 226685 and continued here.
But I've just got a fresh FreeBSD 10.1-RELEASE on AMD64 running and the behaviour of my bluetooth pairing has changed now. Although I still have to restart the services on...
