Governments making it up as they go

kekeke Well, seems like the terrorists over at Lavabit had to bite the dust after a glorious battle with the holy warriors of all that is just and democratic. A great win for that which represents an open and democratic society, the land of the free and home of the brave. Wiki: Lavabit...

    Are you fit?

I did go tl;dr but saw the wiki link and got interested in what it said. I would say that when you eat something you use some, you store some and you keep the sewer occupied with the rest. That being said, I am no expert on thermodynamics but I think it has very little to do with this...

iperf maxed out at 936 Mbps (117 MB/s). Need help tuning it further.

Chances are that you get some packet loss at those speeds are high. I personally reach about 109MB/s when transferring files between my workstation and server via a switch and 2.5m of cable. But I am not sure if it is the hard disks fault or not as I have not done any testing. I'm curious...

It's not the hardware or the OS: it's the user.

I find that old hardware can be a problem, you see I throw away nothing (well almost nothing and yes it can be a problem). I even have a bag with faulty SATA cables, and I cry when I go to the toilet. So when I start to use old hardware and the likes, I know that there is a possibility that...

    Are you fit?

meh I watch a lot of documentaries, and among them are the BBC Horizon series which is a very good one. And here I want to recommend one about exercise. Horizon - The Truth About Exercise (BBC, 2012) And before someone starts to go "liar liar pants on fire", BBC Horizen is what I consider to...

    Verbose..

So I was watching stuff being compiled and installed today when it struck me. Does being so verbose reduce the performance? The reason I ask is because I have written some Monte Carlo simulations before, and as I wrote the code I added a lot of human feedback text for testing purposes. But...

Something is not working, but I digress

edit4: At this point you can skip most of what I have writen... who knows where I will end :/ I just installed a new system and installed a new kernel. But when I boot everything is fine, until I get to the part where I login. Then the system freezes up and prints out four (4) of these...

    ZFS based home storage

Little late.. but meh :) When a PSU is rated 650W it means that it can deliver 650W, it will draw more from the power outlet depending on the efficiency. ZFS needs a lot of RAM, but no worries as RAM is cheap at the moment. ZFS without any fancy functions does not need a lot of processing...

    ZFS based home storage

I myself have and would recommend a AMD Athlon II X2 because its cheap, quite fast and supports ECC. However if you want get ECC working it also requires ECC support by the motherboard. When I bought my NAS hardware I bought a motherboard with a 760G chipset, this way I also don't need to buy a...

    Home Network Specs

What is the purpose of all the servers? I think it suspiciously likely that they are just spinning their fans... :P My "home" network... Internet from school through 1Gb cable in to the "home"(14m2 room) SW: Netgear GS108T 8port 1Gb #1 Old computer(WinXP) - AMD Phenom 8450 3core@2.11Ghz...

First Look: FreeBSD 9.0 On Intel Sandy Bridge

I just read the first page and looked at the pictures on the rest... I've got to ask, it seems like that graphics card is the ONLY hardware that is "equal" for both OS's. So how can this be a fair test if you are testing OS's on different hardware? Shouldn't the hardware be the same if you...

    Too-smart search engines

Don't know how relevant this is to what you are looking for, but google has changed their search a little compared to how it used to be. http://www.ghacks.net/2011/10/25/google-replaces-search-operator/ Hope that helps a little, if not I'm sorry to have wasted your time.

    Why do you update?

So far I have only done if for features, or because something went wrong and I had to do something that required reinstall. I am assuming you are talking about FreeBSD? The only server I have at the moment is a file server with FreeBSD, the rest are desktops with Windows XP or 7. Windows have...

    Making it simple for others.

I think its safe to say that some subjects are more interesting to some then others. That said, it helps if you are good at presenting stuff. Or if whomever it is you are trying to educate/inform is looking up to you. I would defiantly say that its way easier for someone to learn something if...

    A backup story

When I read this.. well I thought about you people :P Its a short article about someone who did not backup their data. In short they stored everything on a server, apparently source code and everything and then it died or something. I've heard two stories, one is that the server died. The...

    ZFS error confusion

The scrub is complete and I have the following error left: storagepool/storage:<0x16268> There also seems to have been some minor repair on two different disks. Some of the content of thevar/log/message file; ZFS: checksum mismatch, zpool=storagepool path=/dev/ad[8,6,10,2]/da[6,7]...

    ZFS error confusion

Well, its a question of money. I don't know where you are from, but maybe students are richer where you are from. I opened a file that I know was in the error message before, but everything seemed fine. I am scrubbing at the moment and I have about 5TB left to scrub, so in about 5 hours...

    ZFS error confusion

No backup really, I am hoping the raidz will hold, has so far.. dunno what im-/outport gonna do for my feelings. I dunno about scrub, last time I tried it sorta died about 3/4 of the way through. But in the end I guess I'll try... and why do you talk like that? :P Logs didn't really make you...

    ZFS error confusion

Hallo :) So the story goes, after installing a new hdd controller and some light use I all of sudden get the message that something has gone corrupt. And sure, zpool status -v tells me that I have two degraded disks, and I'm sorta *beep**beep**beep**beep*ed... However after a restart...

To scrub or not to scrub - Crash by scrub, zfs

So when I try to scrub my little pool it dies. It scrubs and scrubs until it has scrubbed about 90% of the pool. This I am certain of because the second time I tried to scrub I checked every now and then, and death happen around the 90% mark. What happens is that the screen is all black and...
