Replying to my own questions, the first step was to actually install the window manager I wanted to use, which is x11-wm/windowmaker, instead of x11-wm/afterstep.
So I'll mark this one as solved (if I can), since I started out with the wrong window manager.

Since base does not support mounting anything more recent than SMBv1, I installed fusefs/smbnetfs. For starters, I went as follows after installing the package on FreeeBSD 13.1:
# kldload fusefs

You'll need to install x11-toolkits/py-gtk2 and devel/py-xdg, in case you didn't already.
Then try building/installing with devel/gmake instead of the standard make.
I.e.:
