The keyboard configuration is described in the chapter 5.4.7 of the Handbook. In most cases you should not do anything to have your mouse working.
The mouse reference in /etc/rc.conf is only needed if you want mouse support in the console.
Adding locales in ~/.xinitrc should be enough to get all...
It was not my intention to discourage you.
I kept FreeBSD a long time on my desktop and I found it a very good system for my needs. I only had the feeling that sometimes, packages were not working as predictably as I would have wanted them to but that was not a big deal.
Over time, the new pkg...
In the quarterly branch there are packages available, even for security updates:
http://pkg.freebsd.org/freebsd:10:x86:64/quarterly/All/
This is true you will stay with "old" versions, but you will face the same situation with most Linux or BSD desktop systems. And, as this branch gets updated...
This thread has been discussed on the last BSD Now episode:

Well done Oko (and other members) for making it a good article to read.
So now, we've shown the OP how to run Firefox as the root user... Not very good, is it? ;-)
A good practice would be to read the output of a program installation and its manual.
I think you should read the Handbook at least until chapter 8. By reading it, you would have learnt that X (and Firefox) is not meant to be used with the root user. This is why you're are getting this error. Take your time, and read the documentation from the site, this is one of the very good...
In fact /etc/rc.firsttime does this and is deleted after its execution.
This script is one line long: /usr/sbin/fw_update -v , you can rerun this command if needed.
To add to the pros/cons discussion, I noticed OpenBSD's packages have, in general, better default configuration and work out of...
You can press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in directly as root.
Then check if your user belongs to the wheel group in /etc/group. If this is not the case add it at the end of the line. A comma is needed between each user.
Ctr+Alt+F9 should then bring you back to your graphical session.
This point is stressed in the Handbook, and I remember using MBR through the installer (this choice is available when partitioning). I also made the mirror bootable as shown in the Handbook. I guess there is a way to use the bsdinstall on top of an empty mirror. Maybe, the disk layout schemes...
Here is a link to setup a mirror with UFS and bsdinstall (I find the way to do it in the chapter 19.3 of the Handbook too complicated): http://www.ateamsystems.com/tech-blog/installing-freebsd-9-gmirror-gpt-partitions-raid-1/
I didn't give it a go as it is though. In fact, I tried to simplify...
Re: Can't play audio CD's
I personnally use thisperm cd* 0666 so that I can burn cd. Then you need to restart devfs: # /etc/rc.d/devfs restart
Otherwise you could add yourself to the operator group.
I am not sure that you'll be able to read an audio cd with cdcontrol though. You might...
Re: /usr/ports/UPDATING
You're right in fact this command relies on the file /usr/ports/UPDATING from the ports tree. Alternatively you can browse http://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/head/UPDATING?view=markup
Re: How to deal with dependency problems when using only pkg
The package is back to the repository. Nobody answered my message on the mailing list, apart from a private email mentionning a possible license issue. There is an allusion on the Freshports site...
