Is there a way to break down wired kernel usage?

Every discussion on this I can find is dominated by ARC, but I have a system which is pretty much out of memory, I am trying to avoid having to reboot it. It has just under 900M of wired usage with 1 gig RAM, and only 27M of that is on the ARC. The ARC has correctly starved itself, so that is...

OpenSSL 1.1.1 EOL September 2023 - any advice on moving to OpenSSL 3.0?

I got a machine which is supposed to be spare, a duplicate of a production machine, so I will snapshot it and try this week, but the issue is I do have a friend using email on there, so I have to be wary of that, and is hosting my secondary MX as well. -- edit -- Wont be doing this until...

OpenSSL 1.1.1 EOL September 2023 - any advice on moving to OpenSSL 3.0?

This I expected hence my comment, but the base is not the big issue as using 3.0 in ports will make almost everything on the server use 3.0 as dependency which is fine for me. The bigger issue is that the move to 3.0 was left right to the last moment, this is inconsistent with how things are...

OpenSSL 1.1.1 EOL September 2023 - any advice on moving to OpenSSL 3.0?

Are people using this commonly yet? Am surprised I had no warnings from the ports tree (which usually moans a lot when upcoming EOL is coming) and then realised not long ago 1.1.1 is now EOL. Yet I assume future builds of 13.x will have it in base still and the ports tree still points to 1.1.1...

Solved Question re ZFS properties setting for a movie server

ashift 12 should generally be used anyway (modern media is usually at least 4k now), I agree with the larger recordsize suggestion as well.

    PF omitting fragment reassemble

Has the behaviour been changed now in CURRENT? I noticed this pfSense issue, stating its been changed in FreeBSD with your name as the assignee. https://redmine.pfsense.org/issues/14098 Looks you did it, thank you. Link below for others to see...

Solved Zabbix 6 LTS not in the ports tree?

I confirmed it is, compared the hash on the tarball to the git LTS tarball. :) So just a minor issue in the post install text.

Solved Zabbix 6 LTS not in the ports tree?

Just installed net-mgmt/zabbix6-server expecting it to be the LTS version as the zabbix3-server used to be, but post install I see this. This is a Zabbix Standard release! Standard Zabbix releases are supported for Zabbix customers during six (6) months of Full Support (general, critical and...

    PF omitting fragment reassemble

Interesting thread, I have some feedback. Having upgraded my home broadband to gigabit connectivity, I then discovered scrub was causing slow throughput from some servers, it was preventing the congestion window from staying large enough to maintain throughput when cubic congestion provider was...

ZFS Reading on ZFS extremely slow

Interesting its been reported performance recovers after recreating the pool, a likely explanation for that is better fragmentation.

ZFS Reading on ZFS extremely slow

I think its a openzfs regression, I have been doing my own tests, have found several bugs (that also exist in TrueNAS 12), they dont exist on ZFS in 12.x and some of them are performance regressions. If I find a tunable to recover the performance I will reply here.

    Quarterly port problems.

Is anyone else having problems? I changed my script to use https://git.freebsd.org/ports.git a couple of months ago as https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports wasnt working, but now it seems to have switched back to https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports, however 2021Q4 doesnt exist. The page even has a link...

ZFS Custom Parameters - Your Recommendation & Experience

On modern large disks overhead from ashift 12 shouldnt be an issue, also a lower ashift increases metadata usage so the grass isnt as green as you think. Performance hit depends, but if you use an ashift smaller than the physical sectors on the disk then you may get misaligned data. I have one...

ZFS How well does openzfs run on FreeBSD?

So as some on here know I have been using FreeBSD for a long time now, and was an early adopter with ZFS. For me the ZFS experience has generally been very positive on FreeBSD. However I started also using it in Linux with Proxmox a couple of years ago, whilst I haven't had any crisis with it...

status of Spectre / Meltdown mirigations in 2021

FreeBSD has had newer patches, not sure if they all made it to 12, but I agree that wiki page needs to be updated.

ZFS ZFS on FreeBSD 13 and installer.

Had to manually specify the cache file, and that does report ashift 12 so I guess the sysctl was set by the installer, but I do hope in the new openzfs the ashift variable can be changed to report the value rather than the input (0 been autodetect).
