    About installing FreeBSD to GPT...

Hey, I know how FreeBSD-F-S works. Thing is I have no FreeBSD-Installation on my PC at this time! Thats why I said I'd have to install it somehow first to get a bootable FreeBSD System.

    About installing FreeBSD to GPT...

Hi, I'm going to install the FreeBSD 8.1-Release on my GPT hard disk. I will use FreeBSD-From-Scratch anyway, but I think I'll have to follow this guide first to get a bootable system, right? But before I do that, I would be interested in whether there are other ways, too. My first idea...

Getting things like xorg in /usr/local

Anyway, I think that idea to make things clearer is a pretty nice one. Should be more standardized, all executable files here, all configs there, and only some symbolic links for backward compatibility.

    Update FBSD from Scratch book

Hi, I just recognized that many so called mandatory entries in the stage_1.conf.default of FreeBSD from Scratch aren't valid any more whith 8.1, especially in /etc. The problem is, that I don't really know where these files have been moved to, nor which files are needed instead. :\ And...

    USB keyboard not working...

Hi, again a stupid problem: My new USB keyboard doesn't work. I'm using the generic 8.0 kernel. Before FreeBSD boots, the USB keyboard works just fine, e.g. in boot menu or in BIOS. Legacy USB keyboard is enabled. My working keyboard at now is my old AT keyboard, both are connected. In...

Advice for LVM + encryption choice

Hm yes. Do you know when ZFS will get native encryption in it? It was planned for Q1 2010. Or does it already have? If yes, whith which stability?

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

Ok, I know. I've used Ubuntu before as well. But if I think about it, I think I would become depressive with these command line tools, and manpages, just more.

Advice for LVM + encryption choice

Ehh??! Neither do I talk about anything to do with Linux, nor did I ask for a RAID configuration utility. As I said, I want an LVM for a dynamic partition scheme.

    Which is your Favourite Linux?

If I had to choose a linux distro for my desktop, I think I would choose Ubuntu. Whenever there is the possibility of flexibility in the setting up of some linux distro, e.g. Gentoo, I can't stop comparing it with FreeBSD's flexibility and get depressive. :e So I would choose Ubuntu, which I...

What kind of music do you listen to?

Why sould someone just listen to one special kind of music? I know many people like that, mostly metallers, who think like that - but "normal" guys? For my example, I hear sometimes Heavy Metal, then Trance/Trip Hop, then 'mainstream' pop, then Aggrotech, then goth rock...

Advice for LVM + encryption choice

I want to re-setup my workstation on LVM, because I don't want to worry about full partitions and remaining disk space any more. And I want to encrypt some partitions, too. These partitions should be resizeable as well. That is it, I'm looking for the most solid solution to do this. I have a...

    Error while building my kernel

Hi, I get the following error message while compiling my kernel on my 8.0-RELEASE-p4 system: (second line wrapped by hand) MAKE=make sh /usr/src/sys/conf/newvers.sh MYKERNEL cc -c -O2 -pipe -fno-strict-aliasing -std=c99 -Wall -Wredundant-decls -Wnested-externs -Wstrict-prototypes...

How to avoid building various parts of the base system?

Hi there, in previous FreeBSD versions there seem to be the file /usr/src/etc/make.conf, which looked like this. I'm interested in the part 'avoid building various parts of the base system". I didn't find these variables mentioned in Release-8.0, although I'd like to use them. Is there a...
