I want FreeBSD on a smart phone ...

Technically, you could make a FreeBSD "phone". You would need to get a 3g or 4g stick, connect it to something running FreeBSD and then use a softphone for making calls. Personally, I'll just stick with my iPhone. There's a few apps I need that aren't available in stock Linux/FreeBSD and I'd...

Why is PostgreSQL on FreeBSD 11.2 so much slower than on CentOS 7?

The first place I would look is to see if there's anything being bottlenecked. Check and make sure CPU, disk I/O, or something else isn't being pegged. Try testing it on zfs and see if anything changes. FreeBSD out of the box does have conservative defaults, so you're probably going to have to...

BSDCan DevSummit 2016 Live Video Stream

I was hoping that some of the OpenBSD presentations would have been uploaded by now as it looks like they're missing from all of the streams. This is what was presented from the OBSD side: http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20160617141448 I can't confirm or deny this, but apparently a...

Situation with Intel graphics Haswell, Broadwell

New update on the Wiki. I'll have to try testing it. It might be worth grabbing a snapshot now before this and head become too out of sync.

    Difference FreeBSD vs. NetBSD?

Thanks. I don't think Theo's post is a condemnation of ARM hardware but rather that there were some enhancements made to W^X under OpenBSD's amd64 port earlier this year that aren't available in other platforms. http://marc.info/?l=openbsd-tech&m=142120787308107&w=2 As far as I know, the same...

    Difference FreeBSD vs. NetBSD?

NetBSD was supposed to die back in 2006, but they still seem to be going. They have some interesting things, but I can never seem to get it working on my hardware. Certainly. But support for specific hardware can vary. ARM boards aren't like x86 boards where everything boots up the same way...

    Wayland

Because there's a been a small, but vocal minority of people who basically thinks everything created out of the 1980s is sacred and any attempts to change that will turn it into Windows. I think this slide from Theo De Raadt sums up part of the problem with X...

Situation with Intel graphics Haswell, Broadwell

No Haswell support yet. But you can keep track of what's happening on this blog: http://blogs.freebsdish.org/graphics/ The freebsd-x11 mailing list should also contain any updates. In the meantime, you might want to try using the vesa driver if you have any Haswell hardware.

    UEFI boot FAIL!

    No. Clean install.

    UEFI boot FAIL!

Funny, I've been hitting my head on the same issue. Except in my case, the motherboard doesn't see the UEFI system at all. I'm never presented with any option with booting unless I install FreeBSD the legacy way. I can boot from the CD and install it, but that's it. The weird thing is that the...

    Linus Torvalds about GCC 4.9.0

There is work being done to make sure clang compiles on the Linux kernel, but the implementation of it will probably be up to the distribution. http://llvm.linuxfoundation.org/index.php/Main_Page http://clang.debian.net/ That said, one problem with clang is that it's x86 and ARM centric. It's...

My desktop comparison of FreeBSD and OpenBSD

You may have explored this already, but OpenBSD's malloc has some extra options that can enabled: http://www.drijf.net/malloc/

My desktop comparison of FreeBSD and OpenBSD

Funny thing actually, I found this posted yesterday to @misc. Apparently there has been some performance tweaks made to the kernel, so I'll have to try a snapshot.

My desktop comparison of FreeBSD and OpenBSD

I've experimented with both. One of the things I like with OpenBSD is that they incorporated a working KMS framebuffer console, something that's still a work-in-progress in FreeBSD. However, I've found that from a desktop's perspective, OpenBSD runs a bit slow and on slower hardware (Intel...

    Can't build db48 or db6

I ran into this same issue recently on the 64-bit PowerPC version. Someone did post a patch for review, but it doesn't look like it was incorporated into the ports tree yet. http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ppc/2014-April/006944.html The technical details are a bit over my head, so...

    Firewall - NSA safe?

If you're supplying security solutions to businesses, the NSA shouldn't even be on your worry list. Your clients face a much greater threat from disgruntled employees or people who are actively targeting the business. Remember that secure computing practices needs to happen behind the firewall...

    Boot delay

Which server is it? Or more specifically, what motherboard is it using? It could be trying to probe for a device and not getting a response. You might be able to reveal more information by playing with some of the boot(8) flags. My suspicion is that it's a driver issue.

Ethernet card is not detected by FreeBSD 9.1

Actually, Intel does have a driver for it. It's just not in the kernel. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=17509 However, the README doesn't indicate if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit driver, so it may or may not work for you.

What not-so-common activities/passivities do you enjoy for casual fun?

There's actually an interesting book written like that, which deals with shapes living in a 2D world along with the hierarchies involved. It's called Flatland: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/201 It's in the public domain since it was written in 1884. Someone also did a computer animated film...

    iMac G5 installation troubles with FreeBSD 8 & 9

I just installed a 10-CURRENT snapshot and so far it seems to be working. I'm going to do a little more testing on it, but it looks promising. It also looks like 10-CURRENT has better fan speed control as well, as the fans don't seem to be acting up as much. For reference, the ISO snapshot I...
