    Thinkpad X201 compat check

I have seen that FreeBSD has reached version 10.3. Still no support for the Thinkpad X201? Thank you.

So, no support for the X201... Thank you anyway.

I'm curious, too. @UNIXgod, how did it go? Thank you.

Recommended mini USB wireless Wifi dongle?

Yes, they are less powerful. With USB dongles you sacrifice power for convenience. An alternative is going for high-gain USB dongles, like this one: Now, if only it was red instead of white, then it would have been perfect ;-)

Recommended mini USB wireless Wifi dongle?

Apparently they do exists. Look for "micro wifi dongle" on Ebay, for instance ("mini wifi dongle" will get you more hits, but it will match bulkier models as well). Maybe they have a short range, thus they are not recommended? Yet, at the moment I'm using a bulky Belkin F5D7050 and still it...

Linux vs. BSD = No real difference?

Well, then I wasn't clear enough. I said "USA-centric" instead of "USA-only" on purpose, meaning that you can customize it afterwards, but it defaults to the USA. I know that FreeBSD has international support.

Linux vs. BSD = No real difference?

Not at all. There are objective metrics, like: - support for laptops: FreeBSD loses here (this is a deal-breaker for me), and that means you'll have to run something else on your laptop, thus increasing your learning curve; - up-to-date documentation: FreeBSD wins here, whilst with Linux...

Recommended mini USB wireless Wifi dongle?

Thanks for the replies, but I'm looking for a WiFi dongle. My post was not specific enough, sorry. I've updated it.

Recommended mini USB wireless Wifi dongle?

Hello, my USB wireless WiFi dongle is supported, but it is bulky, therefore I'm looking for a mini one. By "mini", I mean something like this: I've looked into the Hardware Notes for the chipset of all the mini USB wireless dongles I've found online, and none was supported. Is...

Replacing the wireless card of an Asus EeePC 1000HE

I realized that replacing the internal wireless card would have required disassembling the netbook, and risking to break things, therefore I went for a supported USB wireless dongle, a Belkin F5D7050 version 3 (FCC ID: K7S-F5D7050B). EDIT: Now, if I only managed to find a supported smaller...

Flame bait: Why BSD is dying, or How I learned to stop worrying and love Linux

Yeah. And I remember an Ubuntu upgrade making my PC unbootable (it wasn't an upgrade between LTS versions, though). What about "There's no rapid deployment system like Debian's fai, or Redhat's kickstart."? My understanding is that Bsdinstall is scriptable.

Flame bait: Why BSD is dying, or How I learned to stop worrying and love Linux

Not a recent article, but it hasn't been discussed here: http://www.section6.net/2011/07/why-bsd-is-dying-or-how-i-learned-to.html EDIT: Seriously, not all of his criticisms still apply. For instance, besides ports, nowadays we have packages available. However, I didn't know that when...

The "ultimate" FreeBSD laptop (in 2012)

Hence suspend/resume and hibernation work? Wow! How is the battery life compared to the original operating system.?

    Handbook license?

I've not consulted the FSF, but thanks for the hint: if I end up pursuing this project, it would be wise to do that. As I stated above, I like the GNU philosophy, therefore a GNU license makes more sense. I could change my mind, though. Thanks for the link. Yes, I know about that book, and...

The "ultimate" FreeBSD laptop (in 2012)

I see that these kind of questions pop up frequently on forums related to open-source operating systems, like this one. While hardware compatibility lists are available, apparently they are difficult to consult. They are constructed to answer the question "Is that laptop compatible with this...

    Handbook license?

Negligent indeed, and disrespectful of other people's work. GNU-licensed and BSD-licensed works can coexist. The way a software can contain source files released under different compatible licenses, a book could do the same with chapters.

    Handbook license?

@swa You're right: GNU licenses are more restrictive than BSD ones. I subscribe to the GNU philosophy, therefore relicensing a derivative work (when feasible) under a GNU license is desirable. And since BSD licenses have always allowed derivative works under more restrictive licenses, I...

    Handbook license?

I forgot to mention that, according to the GNU website, the FreeBSD Documentation License is compatible with the GNU Free Documentation license: "FreeBSD Documentation License (#FreeBSDDL) This is a permissive non-copyleft free documentation license that is compatible with the GNU FDL."...

    Handbook license?

@wblock@ Yes, I had read that license in its HTML version: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/LEGALNOTICE.html Porting the Handbook would require extensive editing... Maybe I could release the port with a dual license: GNU for the new chapters, BSD for those mostly...
