    ProtonMail is a good alternative?

You are right, absolute security does not exist, and maybe the only case to be sure about this is to host the service in our own server. But still, have a security measures is always good.

And I present to you Elementary OS!

I installed Elementary OS on my parent's PC, this distro has a very nice desktop shape and it's very easy to use. To me, the problem is that is Ubuntu-based but obviously they don't care about anything of this "technical" stuff. Just works and looks (very) nice.

Posting on forums.freebsd.org quite a hassle

I understand your feeling, but I understand the moderators and admins too. I hope to learn fast to not give them too much work, heh. A clean...

FreeBSD first overview versus using Linux

FreeBSD was made for servers, in Desktop on the desktop the system has some cons front [compared to? -- mod.] Linux like hardware support. How to determine if 'portsnap extract' has been executed?

Re: how to determine if 'portsnap extract' has been executed Yes, you can check if /usr/ports is empty. Or you can read /usr/ports/UPDATING from the top of the file to the date closest to the last time ports were upgraded or the system was installed.
