This seems like an elaborate prank to make fun of minimalism or someone hasn't yet realized that the real world is orders of magnitude more complex than IT.
It brings back very nice memories of the Sun Ultra 45 workstations we had at the university. Those UltraSPARC were 64-bits and it took some time for Linux to catch up in this particular area. CDE was the peak GUI experience for me and the color palette is very nice.

I multiboot FreeBSD/NetBSD/OpenBSD on an old laptop. I use MATE on FreeBSD. (I recently tried CDE with XLibre and it blew my mind). I also use FreeBSD on a NAS. Virtualization only for experimenting and playing with the kernel.
Linux is what brings food to the table so it's my daily driver...
