    Movies (and TV shows)...

blackbird9, supposedly true in the US as well. (from stuff you've posted I think you're in the UK).

PSA: lpd/lpr will be removed from FreeBSD

Alain De Vos, two suggestions. One is using netcat, e.g., if your printer is at 192.168.1.50 netcat 192.168.1.50 9100 < myfile.pdf That's for pdf files. Secondly I'll spam my own page, which recommends the everywhere driver. https://srobb.net/cliscanprint.html#FreeBSD

Transferring a parent process and its childs

systeutils/reptyr with tmux is probably what you want. Start whatever you're doing in a tmux session make a note of its PID. As I write this, I was thinking that that was what I used to do, but I realize I'm remembering incorrectly. Still, it sounds like it might work. <shrug> Sorry, it really...

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

I still think if Governor Newsom, who will probably run for president, receives enough intelligent dissent, it might help. Especially if you're in the US and will vote in the next presidential election. https://www.gov.ca.gov/contact/

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

Ok, I did a bit of web searching and it's been passed in California to take effect January 2027. How do such stupid people get elected? And one will probably run for president. Zare, it seems that if you remove idiots from power, more idiots take their place.

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

I've not read much about this elsewhere. Is this a law that's going to pass or something some idiot wants or feels that their voters want that will have noise made about it, then ignored? At any rate, it doesn't seem like it will effect that much. And if it bothers any large companies, I'm sure...

Tell me stories about your dog or cat.

As for meowing, I think that some species do, but it's mostly towards their mothers. The meow of a domestic cat shows that it looks at us as a mother replacement. (I'm leaving Siamese out of this, they just like to make noise).

drhowarddrfine my thanks is for the laugh. The last sentence was perfect time, whether you meant it as a joke or not.

Tell me stories about your dog or cat.

As someone who used to train protection dogs, (https://srobb.net/dog.jpg) with dogs, a direct stare is definitely a threat, although I would say there's more to it, stance, accompanying motion, etc. I lost my cats many years ago, though I had them for 18 and 20 years respectively, and I don't...

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

Well, Newsom ain't gettin' my vote for president now. And seriously folks, that might matter enough to him so that if enough of us protest against this, he might be against it too. (I don't even know what Newsom's view on it is.) blackbird9 from what I read, the UK is even worse, as far as the...

Phoenix: another new X server, written in Zig

I agree with you. Even though *my* use of (in this case) Japanese is minimal, Wayland can't do it all. I believe there are some other things that X can do, that Wayland can't, but as it's not that important to me at present, I haven't really paid attention. I hope that X will be around for...

Phoenix: another new X server, written in Zig

T-Aoki, I've said this in other threads, but in case someone wanting Japanese input finds this. With the labwc window manager, you can put the needed variables, XMODIFIERS, QT_IM_MODULE, and such in a file in $HOME/.config/labwc/environment. The only other Wayland window manager I've used is...

    The Random Thread

Well, I brought down my company's mailserver last Friday afternoon. (No, I didn't go home, leaving it broken). And, I'm sorta exaggerating. The time was way off on the server, I reset the time, checked right after to see mail wasn't working, sort of expected. I immediately restarted the Dovecot...

Phoenix: another new X server, written in Zig

Y'know that's a good question. I'm assuming yes, because of RH and its ilk, but they might have some X stuff in there. I know that building labwc on RH requires having XWayland installed. (or for running it anyway).

Other How to backup and restore to spare drive using dump and restore?

There is a book, a bit dated by now, but still useful, by Mike Lucas and only about $10.00 USD. https://www.tiltedwindmillpress.com/product/fmzfs/ If you're not familiar with Mr. Lucas's work, hopefully, as you get deeper into FreeBSD, you'll become so. He's very good at making complex...

It's true and I do shop elsewhere often, especially for electronic and computer stuff. It does get harder and harder to avoid them though.

Hrmm...I was always taught--perhaps by my mother, perhaps by my 8th grade typing teacher in the 60's--to put two spaces after a period. I do it here as well. As for God, when I was talking to Her the other day, She mentioned that you sometimes misinterpret what She told you. :)

    Amazon are crooks.

I agree with Alain De Vos. Firstly Bezos is garbage. He makes workers there miserable--from what I read, white collar as well as in the warehouses. The money saved by treating them like that is not something that he couldn't afford. For me, the most aggravating thing is the Kindle app on my...
