    Movies (and TV shows)...

I cringe when I hear the word woke. What is "being woke"? Is it putting a convicted felon in power, thinking he won't felon and being surprised when he does? That's certainly woke. Is it having empathy for people of other races, sexes, sexual orientation? Doctor Who is woke? For daring to...

    Rant about food.

I don't if this was a line from fortune or somewhere else, but I remember the line, Health food fanatics are going to feel awfully silly lying in the hospital, dying of nothing. (Probably not the exact quote but similar).

Practical suggestions for resolving the Brazilian problem

Good point, but considering that for Thiel it was just payback, I was rooting for the other side--who, to be honest I don't remember their name without web searching, just remembered they were a scandal type site.

Practical suggestions for resolving the Brazilian problem

In the US, at least, it was fairly well known, I think.

Practical suggestions for resolving the Brazilian problem

Wow, he's human? Another piece of human garbage, ruined a company because they printed something bad about him. If curious look up Hulk Hogan and Peter Thiel. Unfortunately, in this world, if you have money, you can do that and avoid all consequences.

Practical suggestions for resolving the Brazilian problem

There is a thread about a similar idiocy in California in the US. https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/will-freebsd-be-available-in-california-in-2027.101846/ Another stupid law. Disappointing, and the conspiracy loving part of me thinks MS,et al, bribed lawmakers, figuring they could attack...

How avoid installing binary package dependency i dont like?

mer, yeah, abiword is alive and kicking. Just for the heck of it, I did, on a vm that doesn't have too much on it, just X, openbox and maybe featherpad which I use to test Japanese in QT apps, pkg install abiword and got abiword: 3.0.5_15 [FreeBSD-ports] dejavu: 2.37_4 [FreeBSD-ports]...

Yes, Chinese would be VERY helpful for kanji. Back when I could read a lot more of it, I remember trying to figure out a martial arts book, and a friend's Chinese friend saw some of it and was able to explain it to us (my friend couldn't figure out either, and he was really well educated). I...

    The Random Thread

No big secret. I was doing karate and became interested in Japanese culture and language. At that time, mid 1990's I made many Japanese friends as there were, more than now, a lot of Japanese large and small businesses. (I worked in an office supply near the UN and the Japanese mission and...

PSA: lpd/lpr will be removed from FreeBSD

Cups uses /usr/local/bin which, at least sometimes, gets superseded by lp's /usr/bin I say sometimes because I've found if I'm printing from firefox, it uses cups without me needing to specify the path. I dunno if this is what caused your issue, but I've known it to be a problem in the past.

I remember when I first put up my page on Japanese in Linux/*BSD a lot of things were harder. I had a separate section on printing--I don't remember what the steps were, but I think I used openoffice and had a convoluted way of getting there. I thought of this because my wife, last night, said...

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

There's a thread on something similar going on in Brazil. https://forums.freebsd.org/threads/practical-suggestions-for-resolving-the-brazilian-problem.101913/ I kind of think as has been said earlier in this thread, it's MS and friends lobbying, saying they're worried about children, to force...

    Uplift Privileges on FreeBSD

I'm finding certain things don't work correctly with it. Trivial things, for instance a script that goes sudo something sudo alsothis, and if I change it to mdo -i something alsothis, it won't start to do the script till I exit. Also finding a few things act differently with doas (using...

Other Minimal WM that allows resize/fullscreen

In reply to MG, it's ToggleDecorations. I do that with key shortcut, but also had a setting for app whatever, to have no decorations. At the end of my rc.xml (the open box config file) I would have <application name="uxterm"><decor>no</decor></application> which would, by default, open up...

Other Minimal WM that allows resize/fullscreen

I'm not sure about smallest. With openbox you can maximize a window to take the full screen. With a tiling window manager like dwm, if you only have one thing open, it will take the full screen. I feel like I'm missing something in your question though, but if you, say, want a terminal to take...

    Uplift Privileges on FreeBSD

mer doas is from OpenBSD. FreeBSD has it, but the persist feature doesn't work, so you have to type your password every time. There is, however, opendoas, which honors the persist feature in /usr/local/etc/doas.conf so if you type a password it will stay in effect for a few minutes.

Will FreeBSD be available in California in 2027?

In many states, you cannot drink till you are 21. However, you can join the army at least 3 years before that. I don't know minimum enlistment age, but you were ready to be drafted once you hit 18.
