I forgot to mention, not long afterwards I discovered that I had been making only one copy of the loader (not the two that are recommended). In a nutshell, I was using a loader that might have been around two years old.
Since I began making two copies: much, much faster.
A fair comment. The MATE desktop environment is not for everyone.
