What is the best way to create a 1-2PB storage solution with ZFS for 5000+ users

Isn't that more like 50TB than 1PB? Or is the idea to add more storage servers as time goes by? Otherwise, if the plan is to have just 2 servers then isn't the best solution actually to have just 1 server? Directly attaching the disks to the main server would, I'm sure, save you a lot of...

    Intel Modular Server drivers

Hi, it's pretty normal that the big vendors don't list FreeBSD as supported to be honest. That doesn't mean FreeBSD won't work on the kit, just that they don't make any effort to ensure that it does or put resources into FreeBSD drivers etc. What actually matters is if FreeBSD has support...

    ZFS performance degradation over time

Is read performance better if you share a UFS file system via Samba or FTP? It would certainly be very odd if this was due to ZFS given the other performance test you mention in your last post... thanks Andy.

    High memory utilization by BIND

Setting max size I would have thought is exactly what you need, BIND 9.6 has no limit set by default so set this to something appropriate for the amount of RAM you are prepared to let BIND use... thanks Andy.

    newsyslog keep owner:group

A custom script? As you already realised, you can only define user and group once for a given newsyslog entry so you don't have any options with that... A custom script should be fairly straight forward though... Andy.

Bad performance of NFS with ZFS

To get sysctl settings to be persistent across reboots you need to put them in sysctl.conf.

    istgt reload support

Hi, I have thought about this problem, but as I currently don't have demand for more clients I haven't actually tried this yet. But my idea is to have a jail for each iSCSI client, so that you only need to restart the istgt daemon for the client you are modifying, all other client will have...

Bad performance of NFS with ZFS

Hi, Join the club. It is well known that NFS performance is low on ZFS. This is due to the fact that NFS goes mad requesting flushes all the time which means that write IO/sec are critical for performance. You are using slow disks in a slow configuration, RAIDZ. The best thing you can do with...

    Apache crashing - lockf status

Ok, firstly I should say I don't understand exactly the output of truss so I'm having a bit of a guess as I would trying to debug one of my own systems. I'm not sure that the "Resource Temporarily Unavailable" error is related to the file system. But you can test the file system by, for example...

    Apache crashing - lockf status

    Well the last thing in the truss is this, including an error: 81477: open("/usr/local/apache/htdocs/images/3motivos/1.png",O_RDONLY,00) = 22 (0x16) 81477: fcntl(22,F_GETFD,) = 0 (0x0) 81477: fcntl(22,F_SETFD,FD_CLOEXEC) = 0 (0x0) 81477: mmap(0x0,153,PROT_READ,MAP_SHARED,22,0x0) =...

    Apache crashing - lockf status

Hi, Can't say much from that info either, but others may spot something or have other suggestions for debugging info. Did you manage to confirm all the file systems are clean? Also they have free space right? Also have you made any configuration changes since this started? Upgraded anything...

    Apache crashing - lockf status

Sorry! I made a typo, the option for lsof is "-p" not "-o", can you try that?

    Apache crashing - lockf status

Hi, To me that doesn't mean too much. Can you also try lsof? If not already installed then install from sysutils/lsof. Hopefully lsof will tell you what file it's trying to access/lock. Andy.

    Apache crashing - lockf status

Hi, lockf seems to mean that the process wants to have an exclusive lock on a file, so something is hanging in that process. It could be a bug in Apache, an Apache module, PHP etc etc. It could also be a file system error, can you reboot to make sure all file systems are clean? Also could be...

Help me build my ZFS box

Comparing 2x RAIDz1 vs 1x RAIDz2, the former will provide twice the write IOPS than the latter. I think read performance should be similar for both options but don't have that 100% clear myself. But I think stating twice the performance is over simplifying a little... With regard rebuild...

FreeBSD ZFS Filesystem strange behaviour with NFS

From the original post it seems your Linux client is trying NFSv4 first and then falling back to NFSv3. If you want to use NFSv4 then have a read of the man page nfsv4 as you need to add some extra bits to /etc/rc.conf and also use different syntax in /etc/exports. If you are happy to use NFSv3...

FreeBSD ZFS Filesystem strange behaviour with NFS

Hi, Firstly, personally I'd setup the shares manually in /etc/exports rather than use the zfs commands. Secondly, I doubt your problem has anything to do with ZFS. What are the permissions on /home? Also if you want to prove to yourself the problem is not specifically related to ZFS try...

    Webmail for existing setup?

I agree with SirDice that IMAP would be a good idea, Dovecot for example. For webmail we use Horde (IMP) which I can recommend, its fast and works well. Main negative for me is the default skin is horrible :P.
