    FreeBSD Screen Shots

First of all: disclaimer: I am not 100% sober at the time of writing... and having said that.. SO AWESOME to see this thread still being alive & active today!! ... I think I participated before, not sure, but I sure as heck am gonna do so now! Question => How do you recognize a (former?)...

I am the only one finding freebsd-update not user-friendly?

Why the handbook though? If you're using the console then I can highly recommend adapting to either sysutils/screen or sysutils/tmux; this allows you to keep multiple console sessions open at the same time. Then just check the manualpage in another 'tab': freebsd-update, this will show you all...

    UFS vs ZFS

Well, now that this thread got revived.. (note? => I have no idea if I previously commented) ... If you ask me (= a former SunOS fanboy) then (Open!)ZFS is simply superior by design. Back in the day (before 2024 2022) there was a concessus that using UFS had less overhead concerns because...

Text adventures ("interactive fiction") on FreeBSD? => WHOAH!

Hi gang! I started gaming on a Commodore 64, now plenty of years ago, and I've always had a pretty diverse interest / curiosity in games. I enjoy action games, card games, simulations, adventures (Maniac Mansion & Zak McKraken & the Alien Mindbenders were pretty awesome) and... text adventures...

Solved Can't find java/eclipse in packages.

That's interesting, because the port itself specifically mentions "ONLY_FOR_ARCHS= aarch64 amd64" which makes me assume that this should also reflect on the package. Also note that the page you linked only mentioned the build process. Even so.... hishnik : You can always build the port...

Solved Can't find java/eclipse in packages.

What version of FreeBSD are you using? I just checked my ports collection and it's still there alright (note: this has 0 meaning for the package repository!) so I'm wondering if your version could be related. When in doubt we can always check Freshports. (edit) I did some digging (<= Java...

What's the current procedure for maintaining ports and packages up to date

Thank you very much for that, really appreciate it.. Yah, that's the result of doing an allnighter while fixing some missed dependencies in the kernel modules ("MODULES_OVERRIDE") and experimenting with including & removing acpi / hid. No excuse, obviously; that was stupid of me.

What's the current procedure for maintaining ports and packages up to date

Sorry for a 'double post' but I just realized that I forgot to mention something very important, so instead of editing I figured I might as well comment again; you asked about the "current procedure" afterall. I know this is also well documented, who cares. You asked, I answered and then I'd...

What's the current procedure for maintaining ports and packages up to date

First, I know it sounds cliche, but "best" really is in the eye of the beholder. Some people use build targets manually as they're laid out in ports whereas others rely on frameworks like, say, ports-mgmt/poudriere. I myself still fully rely on Portmaster (+ a set of scripts I developed to help...

Solved can we push a new packages full all at same time ?

Now, at the risk of coming across as snarky (not my intention!) but I still got to wonder: why would you want to upgrade production systems ASAP? Especially when the update had nothing to do with security concerns but is rather a bit of a rebuild? Surely that can wait for a few days (or a week)...

What would you like to see over the next few FreeBSD versions?

I'd like to see a small change in cp. It's still referencing rcp in its SEE ALSO section however... /bin/rcp is currently obsolete according to /usr/src/ObsoleteFiles.inc. I don't know all the details yet, but I do hope I can get a change request in somehow ;)

    PF A simple pf rule?

Well, I can't speak for any others but when I read your post I assumed to be dealing with a PF related issue, but as I read further it became clear to me that the issue was more about bridging rather than packet filtering. And my experienced with bridges are dated, not to mention that I only...

Recovering deleted files from zfs pool.

You are indeed misunderstanding my point. I'll keep it a bit short because it's kinda offtopic within the context of the OP's issue but the main point is this... If you use zfs-send to make a backup of a dataset and then save that as an image file then you cannot access said image file's...

    Solved Too many pythons

If you're building from ports then definitely take a closer look at /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.default-versions.mk and define the appropriate port version(s) in /etc/make.conf; that can save you a lot of hassle.

A network problem stopped my installation process.

CURRENT and STABLE are not what their names might imply: they're not reliable, far from it. SO when you run into issues with them.. either report those (and find a solution for never paid out bonus points) OR... get a release like NX mentioned above me. Everything other than 'release' is at...

    Git Managing Ports

First: OMG.. I feel kinda fuzzy to be refenced like that in the OP.. it was also reason for me to keep out of this because.. stuff. Second: I agree with SirDice above and ... this doesn't help you but running it on 14.2 has no issues. BUT.. you mentioned 13.5. I so happen to have such a setup...

Recovering deleted files from zfs pool.

In my opinion dump is the one main thing which UFS holds over ZFS, and I'm really missing out on it. Simple reasoning: with restore you can browse through the whole archive and only restore parts of it. Can't do as much with ZFS: the backup has to become part of the pool itself. Also keep in...

Recovering deleted files from zfs pool.

First: kudo's for being honest about all this (referring to Proxmox). Not gonna lie either: part of me is saying.. well, you've picked a free yet still commercial product. Go ask them? Now: I don't mean this as criticism (!) but you need to keep in mind that there might be options within...

Building your own custom FreeBSD 14 environment

Hi gang! Editorial I've been using FreeBSD for roughly 8 or 10 years now I think (edit =>) nope: for 12+ years and trust me: that's hardly an impressive feat because I know of people who are even "older" than me when it comes to being a "beastie". So the one thing that has always impressed me...

Solved protection of /usr/local/etc/ files (or lack thereof)

[...] Keep in mind that on Unix everything is like elastic. There are no hard rules on doing things and with a bit of scripting you can set up a ton of flexible behavior. Still... The following is probably a bit unorthodox here and there but I can assure you that it saved my skin several...
